Not much to upgrade but for a little more he could do a total overhaul!!!!
I am not a big fan of amd or msi motherboards but either of these combos would be a night and day difference from what he has.And the i3 2100/2120 would totally rock!

Intel Core i5-2310 Sandy Bridge 2.9GHz (3.2GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I52310
Reuse his old case/power supply, graphics card till he gets money for a better graphics card.^^^^^^ is prolly what id buy with the money total it adds up to 326.97, he could even get away with cheaper ram

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820161474<--- 24.99 cheaper ram but ive never heard of them before
Wintec One 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 3OH16009U8H-4GK

Hope this helps:D
There are tons of different possibilities buy a cheaper processor and a better motherboard ect.. but what i picked is pretty good for what he wants to spend

What about the Hd6750 ?

He could upgrade his video card but that would net small gains imo,but its totally up to him biggrin.gif
He could even get a cheaper dual core intel sandy bridge processor and cheaper motherboard to get him at the 300$ mark exact that would still be better i think

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157230<---motherboard 99.99
ASRock P67 PRO3 (B3) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148542<--- memory 29.99
Crucial Ballistix sport 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model BLS2KIT2G3D1609DS1S00

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115077<---processor 129.99
Intel Core i3-2120 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I32120
Totals 259.97 leaves some room for better processor maybe but id stick with at least a quad core

Without the i3 2120 and add the quad core
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115089<--processor 184.99
Intel Core i5-2310 Sandy Bridge 2.9GHz (3.2GHz Turbo Boost) LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I52310

It totals 314.99

Will tell'em that, But the Intel graphic 2000 or 3000 is not as good as the 8600gt is it?

So if he overclocks his core2duo to 4.4 GHz,would that still bottleneck the GPU ?

The intel graphics 2000 is reviewed here i have no idea about the 8600 gt performance
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-intel-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/11
And thats if he can overclock it to 4.4 on that motherboard without frying it.
IM currently using on board graphics at 1920/1080 on low settings and it plays most the newer games fine on low!
LOL i hate low graphics......But they play like i just beat mw3 i still play mw2 multi cause i know the maps haha
And he could still use his old graphics card.
Only thing is with the processors i picked he cant overclock them much at all.But they are a better archetecture.

And are you sure his 8600gt is a 1gb card?
All im seeing is 256mb... Nm found it
He could also find another 8600gt 1gb and sli them if his motherboard is capable of that.

Id go with either of them then.
Even the 259.97 one would net some gains but the 314.00 one would get him a nice improvement over his old system.
