Budget build for mom

Thread Starter
Gonna put part of my tax return to work buildin a new pc for mom. Right now she uses some 200$ netbook thing she got through verizon that is a complete piece of crap. My little sister is in high school now and both of my brothers are getting into middle school as well so it'd also be benefitting them so they have a computer to use for school or w/e. It's going to be a very basic use computer. Probably the most intense thing they'd be using it for is youtube video's and maybe some flash games on newgrounds or kongregate. I'm pricing this out at microcenter since I plan on getting one of the FX-4100 bundles w/ the free after rebate gigabyte board. I have 2 of the NZXT source 210 cases on the way that should be here thursday, a 300GB HDD that is currently my steam drive in the rig im using now (which is dumb cuz I have a samsung F3 1TB in here too, I was just too lazy to move everything to it >.<) that i'm going to use for it, and a DVD burner that I just replaced w/ a blu-ray combo drive so those are the 3 things I don't need.

Here's what I came up with:
- 300GB HDD, DVD Burner, NZXT Source 210 - Have all these already
- AMD FX-4100 - 99$ at Microcenter. 3.6Ghz quad core. I know these haven't had the best rep recently and I personally prefer intel but I love amd for their price/performance ratio's.
- Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P mATX motherboard - 10$ or free after rebate (that i'll prolly never send in). The newegg reviews seem pretty positive for this board so I'm hoping it'll be solid for a basic board.
- 4GB DDR3 1600 Corsair Vengeance ram
- CX430 Corsair Builders series PSU
- Win 7 HP

- HP 20" LCD Monitor - http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354448 - 7 5/5 reviews on newegg should be fine and for 90$ it seems like a good deal
- Kensington Pro Fit mouse - 20$
- Logitech K120 keyboard - 15$
- TP-Link 150Mb/s USB Wireless-N adapter
- Logitech LS21 2.1 Speakers

Total: 473.87 after tax

Any suggestions? See any problems? My main concern is that the onboard graphics on the motherboard are going to be too weak for even youtube/flash games. Anyone have this board and tested the onboard? Should I pick up a small gpu?

I have no experience with the onboard video. If it is too weak then you may want to consider a Llano desktop CPU/mobo combo?

An APU/MB combo would cost more than twice what the FX-4100 w/ free mobo microcenter deal costs. That's why I'm going with it. Tryin to keep it budgeted but powerful enough that it's going to last them several years w/ minimal upgrades. I may be wrong, but I'm going to assume that the FX-4100 is quite a bit better than a 3870K in the cpu department, and I should be able to pick up a GT 430 or something and smoke the 6550D apu graphics for less than it would cost to go w/ an apu setup (w/ the microcenter deal of course).

760G's onboard video is weak.  It falls short of being able to GPU accelerate all HD content (including YouTube HD/Adobe Flash content, which 760G cannot accelerate), which I consider to be a minimum standard for all modern PCs.  You may wish to consider adding a low end card such as an 8400GS that can play back HD content.

I think your on the right track with your parts list.I've been seriously and constantly looking into that FX4100 for $99 combo to upgrade one of my HTPC's.Get yourself a cheaper keyboard and mouse combo than what you listed and get a cheap GPU for like $30 .

Actually I think it is the other way around, that 3870K edges out FX-41xx. The onboard video doesn't have what it takes to accelerate HD video. If you want dGPU pick Radeon HD5570/6570, they smash GT 430 and what I considered the king in sub $65 budget GPU.

6550D equals to 430 performance (provided you use DDR3-1600 minimum).

I don't recommend the 4100. Go with a Pentium G630 - it beats out the 4100 for $20 less.

Put that $20 toward a discrete VGA, better PSU (I've heard a lot of bad stuff about the Builder series), or a better motherboard.

With a intel proc he cant use the mobo deal so he has to put in more money for it.
I think for the basic use its ok.
Buy a second hand gpu card for like 40 dollar so it takes the vids.
Get that 40 from saving a little on mouse+ kb to buy one combo package. My set whas only 30 euro(kike 25 dollar)
And a diff gpu
