Parts for a WHS

Thread Starter
I will be building a WHS that will do backups, FTP site, media server/itunes, ripping DVD/CD(s), and etc...

I bought a NZXT Source 210, problem I'm having is buying hardware for the machine..

My buddy is selling a GA-P67A-UD3-B3 to me for 50$, If I were to buy that motherboard should I get a i3-2100T or beef it up with Quad Core CPU?

But I am debating to use this or go another mobo/cpu setup.

Give me your thoughts on this.. Also how much ram should I get? 8GB or 16GB?

My price limit is 300$ for CPU/MOBO/RAM.

Thanks guys. thumb.gif

A i3 2100 should be sufficient for that kind of usage. I would say 8GB would be enough.

Agree.

Yes a quad would be faster ripping, but how much ripping are you going to be doing? Plus a quad uses more power and costs more.

8 gigs should be all you need for this. 4 would work fine truthfully, but you can get a cheap 8 gig 1333 set of DDR3 for like $25 right now, so may as well.

You could also look at the AMD A-350 APU's (but not real sure how quickly they would rip DVD's).

edit: e-350 is not an option for ripping. Way too slow.

Which version of WHS? Will you be doing any transcoding?

I currently have WHS v1 and hope they come out with WHS 2012 based on W8. The "new" Storage Pool in W8 is must-have!

Ripping will be done on my sig rig below.. That was the same though process I was going for getting a dual core, espically the 2100T. I appreciate the help smile.gif

I will be going with WHS 2011, but I will be using a raid card in the future... I've never liked the thought of onboard raid and I haven't used it ever.

As for transcoding.. I don't think I will have to. I will be streaming TopGear that I download in .AVI format and I can play the episodes from a flash drive plugged into the TV with no problem..

Anything less than $150 are all host-based controllers... they are no better than onboard RAID. They do allow server migration but performance is the same or worse than onboard.

Then any dual-core will be plenty with 4GB of RAM.

You should go no less than RAID5. RAID6 is probably a good idea for a server.

ahhh thanks for clearing that up, so i guess the OP can fine the search and find a card over that range but i guess then he will have to read up on it as just becuase its over $150 wouldnt mean that its actually good, so what should he look for? this will help me too lol

i agree, this will be plenty for a file server/FTP site/media server/itunes

I would try to do RAID 6 as you get the benifits of RAID 5 but better protection as it can handle a two drive failure. the downside is you need atleast 4 drives instead of three like RAID 5 and you use morespace for parity data
