That's part of the difference in why my sister got a prebuilt rather than me building her one. Getting a dual core Athlon II ~3GHz, 3GB RAM, 1 750GB or 1TB drive, a small form factor (better for her) PC, plus keyboard, mouse, Windows 7 64-bit, and 21" (?) 1600 x 900 monitor for ~$400 wasn't that bad about half a year ago. It may not be the best deal ever, but it was about the best we found locally and still wasn't bad at all, and she needed it pretty immediately for online school work (the other reason we got it). When I tried piecing something together on Newegg, I got close, but it'd have been sans the hard drive at least (she had an old 160GB SATA I from the old PC that failed), plus the wait, so we just went with it.

Still, I find the price of Windows fine if you stick to what you need. Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit retail is $130 or so if you have at least one version of Windows from within the last decade, and that works for most people. The people who need Professional are probably not as bothered by the extra price (or they get OEM which also $130). It's a piece of software you use under everything, all day, for years.

I will be probably only be buying local though, I don't have a credit card and refuse to use paypal after they screwed up my bank account and would not resolve the issue. The gt 430 actually gets the same or a little more ppd folding though then the 8800/9800gt with less power draw. Still nice deals though thumb.gif

You need to understand that f@h client is compiled under Intel compiler, therefore Intel CPU will edge out AMD CPU at similar performance level. 940 BE at stock clock gets around 5000 ppd, while my i3-2100 at stock clock gets around 6000 to 7000 ppd.

For reference FX-8150 gets around 13600 ppd at stock speed. Take 60% off from FX-8150 ppd performance, and you get approx. 5500 ppd for FX-41xx (estimation).

GT 430 ppd,
http://www.overclock.net/t/849662/mpc-gt-430-folding-results-ppd-power-usage

However from gaming stand point, Phenom II is better than FX-41xx.

Thanks for the stats! Couldn't find much on the sandy bridge dual cores but that's some decent ppd for the i3 2100! I was getting around 5-6k ppd on my x2 555 unlocked to a quad at 3.6ghz using regular smp, been folding on a phenom I 9600 for a couple weeks now and still havent reached my 10 wu's to get my bonus lol. I have owned a few gt 240's and a couple gt 430's and they are great folding cards. $42 for 6k+ ppd can't be beat especially considering at only 75 watts.

Edit:

I did also own an i3 530 for a while and it got about 5-6k ppd at 4ghz.

Well with used parts (like your build) anything is possible

I've seen new (foxconn i believe) h61 boards for $25 AMIR. Combine that with a $100 i3 2100 @ microcenter...
