[Build Log] Project: Vortex (Hiatus!) - Page 10

Sorry guys, another text-only update! frown.gif

Conacted Dwood here on OCN after a fellow Tempest modder told me of his work with custom GPU backplates, about getting a replacement I/O plate for my motherboard made for me. He replied a few days ago sayng he'd be happy to once I get the measurements down fo him! Unsure what to do about painting it though, let him do it? Do it myself? Or use that little bit of carbon fibre wrap I have lying around... hmm.

I've also sanded down the areas of my fan that was damaged from that snapped blade a while back. On closer inspection, it seems other parts were damaged too. The other Cougar fan has chipping, and so did my recently-finished ODD. Sanded the damaged areas on them too, and am planning to paint them again tomorrow!

Will have pics up of the work once done.

Sorry to hear about the set backs frown.gif AS for the I/O plate I think having it pure white like the ram would look the coolest so to get that exact same color you would probably be best off painting it your self.

Honestly, that's what I was leaning towards anyway, painting white myself. But it's nice to have some input in the decision!

First part re-painted today was the ODD cover, take a look maybe.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Second up is the front I/O panel - I think it's went pretty well, filling in the holes for the audio and reset button, and widening the power button hole to house a new button.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

I just noticed the sides of the cover aren't painted yet doh.gif Oh well. Shouldn't take long doing that. Also thinking of picking out the eject button on the cover with white. Thoughts?

As a side note, does anyone know how easy/hard it is to swap out the LED on an ODD? Looking to replace the standard green LED on mine.

Got everything nearly finished up, the fans and most of the ODD are re-painted. I need to go over the damaged fan one more time along the split in the snapped blade. I'll have the photos of everything up tomorrow, as well as a bit of a surprise!

can you give me some tips on how to paint fans.

1. how did you actually remove the blades
2. what brand white did you use? im looking for white aswell.
3. did you somehow prepare the fans before painting? besides masking tape obviously.
4. any care taken to re-asseble it?

i have the cougar vortex aswell and i was just curious.

Hi there!

I'd be glad to help out. For the Cougar fans, all you need to do is literally push the fan off (it's held on using magnets only, afaik).

Someone else asked this a while back and I made a short video of me doing it. Be sure to apply the pressure evenly though, since it's quite easy to break something if you're not careful. Also, the first time disassembling it is always the hardest, so bear that in mind. You can see the video here.

As for the brand of white, I use spray paint from Halfords (Mercedes Arctic White). If you're not in the UK though, then you'd need to find somewhere else to get spraypaint, I think Halfords is a UK-only company. Any large-ish auto shop should stock a good variety of automotive quality paints though, so just go for a browse and pick one you like thumb.gif

I didn't prepare the fans at all before painting, other than cleaning them thoroughly beforehand to remove any dust/dirt/grease that would have been trapped under the paint. When painting make sure to do it where there's as little dust as possible, trust me, you do NOT want your careful work ruined by dust falling onto the wet paint redface.gif

For reassembling the Cougar fans, all I did was lubricate the fan with a little oil, and push it back into place.

For any other fans, the process is a little more complex, and I'd recommend looking around on Youtube for a walkthrough or something.

Hope this helps!

Ah, yes, I painted the enclosure black. The rubber vibration mounts I just painted along with the rest of the enclosure, the paint seems like its adhering well to the rubber, though I know it could easily crack or be rubbed off, so I'm gonig to be extra careful with it smile.gif

Just finished some more work to the front I/O panel, I still need to solder the wires onto the pwoer button, and perhaps sleeve the wires too (when I have the money to spare), but other than that it's done!
