questions on a retro-styled case (transformed into the story behind my build)

Thread Starter
hello overclockers

this thread has been updated and turned into something like the story behind the build thing. my journey into finding some of the parts that i want to incorporate in my rig, the road from "i have two left hands" to what will hopefully be a modded case with an awesome look.

here is the original first post in the thread, edited for length and updated to reflect the fact that i've now decided that i will be putting a side window on the case. i know the 690 II advanced has a side window version, but it wasn't in stock, and i'm like a kid... i HAD to have a case then, not later smile.gif)
Quote:
i'm building a new gaming rig for myself and i'm going for a retro sci-fi look (think gadgets in jules verne's novels), but not so over-the-top as that famous steampunk mod (you know the one)

i have a cooler master 690 II advanced. here are some things i've looked at to give you an idea of the style i'm looking for:

- anything in the cooler master musketeer line
- cooler master aquagate max
- lamptron fan-atic 5-port

please share any ideas, links, photos etc you might have. anything goes... gauges, switches, dials, reservoirs... anything retro-technical that can be installed in the 5.25'' bays or anywhere visible in or outside the case

since i already have a build log, this thread here will just be about the more unusual parts and a place where people can (and hopefully will) give me suggestions for items similar to those i'm already looking for

well the obvious choice for a retro look would be the nMEDIAPC Red Wood Wood/Steel HTPC 8000 ATX Media Center / HTPC Case
would need external liquid tho. but what you are looking for is more or less a custom built project. not something they'll have off the shelves.

thanks for your suggestion, but, as i've stated, i already have the 690 II advanced case and also i'm not going for an over-the-top look. nice case tho smile.gif

i believe some items i could get off the shelf... since i have found some already.

with considerable effort, i was able to get my hands on a cooler master musketeer 1. 31$ on ebay. it's in the mail. yay me! smile.gif

the lamptron fanatic has already arrived. i looks great and fits with the 690, but i have hit a problem with it, which is detailed in my build log.

as far as the aquagate max is concerned... oh boy... you wouldn't believe the story behind this scavenger hunt lol

after googling and trawling thru countless "for sale" ads dated as far back as 2008, i have come across a very recent ad, on a forum in... namibia! smile.gif) after anxiously reading thru the thread to see if it's still for sale, i discovered that it was. all i needed was to make an account, contact the seller and convince him to ship to europe! a lot easier said than done... made an account, but first post needs to be approved by a mod before it shows up in a thread... waited for two days and nothing. i ended up tracking down one of the mods on facebook and contacting him. i've also sent pm to the seller... now i'm just nervously waiting for a reply... the forum is pretty small and people obviously don't log in very often, so all i can do is wait and pray smile.gif

if anyone has any suggestions/ideas in line with these retro looking parts, don't be shy! smile.gif

better yet, if anyone out here has an aquagate max they no longer need, or you know somebody that might know somebody that maybe has an aquagate max, now is your chance to make some money from it... maybe even get back what you originally paid for it wink.gif

i forgot to mention that i don't trust myself to mod the case.

so i was out drinking one night and i ran into a friend who is very good with building stuff and is obsessed with tools. as much as we spend on pcs, he spends on powertools. so i told him that i want to cut a hole in the side panel and place a plexi over the hole... and i was whining about not being able to do it and being afraid i'd ruin the case... so he offered to do it for me. no charge, ofc smile.gif

all i need now is for the damn snow to melt so i can get the case to his place smile.gif

the seller on the namibian forum finally replied... unfortunately he sold the thing a few days ago frown.gif

he felt sorry for me but couldn't understand why i couldn't get a new one. see, apparently, in namibia they've had these things on the shelves as recently as last year. he was surprised to hear they've discontinued the model years ago. needless to stress that they had them on the shelves, as in they no longer have them

so i'm back to square one with the aquagate max quest

after a looong wait of around two weeks the coolermaster musketeer has finally arrived. it has no cables and it's silver. it does light up tho, so i know it's working. a pic of it is up in my build log. i'm painting it black so it matches the case and will post more pics once i'm satisfied with the paint job and i get around to putting it back together. i've already ordered a thermal probe since it doesn't have any of the original accessories, as i mentioned earlier. only thing that i'm not going to be able to replace is the pci bracket which was used to run the sound from the mb/sound card to the musketeer and then back out to the speakers... not terribly upset about not having it, but it would have been nice to see that vu-meter come to life. will see if i can find a way to do that

aaaand... *drumroll* wouldn't you know it, an aquagate max has popped up right here on OCN smile.gif) found a very recent post in the appraisals section. sent a pm and i'm anxiously waiting for a reply, with renewed hope

more news on the musketeer front.

it's now painted black and looks stunning installed in the case.

i kept looking for pictures of the audio bracket on the internet so i could figure out how i could make one on my own and get that vu-meter going. i couldn't find any large images so i couldn't see what's really making it work... but i did find a pretty detailed description of it and its cables. then it struck me. i work for a tv channel... we have sound engineers! biggrin.gif so, off i went to the sound department and, sure enough, after i explained to a guy what i need, he said he can make a cable that would accomplish just what the audio bracket did: take the audio signal from the motherboard, run it thru the musketeer, then back out to speakers. it's basicaly just a "y" (or rather "v") shaped cable with two 3.5mm male jacks and one 3.5mm female jack. i just have to buy the parts and he'll make it. hope to find some time these days to go get the parts

EDIT: cable made. tested aaand... the vu-meter is ALIVE!!! smile.gif

ohh... and, hoping that i will get the aquagate, i now have a new problem smile.gif

anyone know if the green color comes from the coolant? or is there a green light inside? or green tinted glass? green wouldn't match the blue musketeer lights or the red/blue ones from the lamptron...so i need to get it red or blue... if it's the coolant it's no problem to get another color... but i'm stuck if it's not the coolant that gives the green colour

EDIT: ok, after some reading it seems that not only is the coolant green (that can be replaced) but there's also green led (that can also be replaced) and the glass or plastic window is also green (that, sadly, cannot be replaced. or it could be, but it would be quite a pain in the derriere). so, like so many times before on this still young build, i'm stuck.

if anyone is actually reading this, now would be a good time to jump in and help me with ideas smile.gif somehow i don't think the green would go well with the blue/red of the musketeer and lamptron

aquagate max is a done deal. i'm so pleased i can't even describe it. i was certain this quest would end in failure... yet ocn has come thru for me

can't wait to see it in my case all lit up... even green as it is smile.gif

had a bit of trouble with the aquamax deal and waited a long time for the seller to respond to some of my messages and the thing dragged out unnecessarily long, but he has come thru and the wait is finally over... the thing has been paid for and shipped... now i just have to wait some more until it actually gets here smile.gif

i understand from the previous owner that the green glass on the front can be removed... it's just a faceplate or something. will let you know as soon as the thing gets here and i set my screwdriver loose on it. i just have to get it to light up red instead of green or it will ruin the whole look of the rig. speaking of look of the rig, the aquagate is the final piece of the puzzle for the time being. the last item (out of a very small list of just three things smile.gif ) i had planned to achieve the retro look... i just had a thought tho... it might be nice to give the case a bit of a distressed look... with the paint i mean... but that is just too big of a job to consider right now. would go pretty well with the gauges and switches and all that.

you can keep the suggestions coming if you have any. will post a pic of the case in like two weeks or so, when i get the aquagate delivered and mock-install the reservoir. even if the case will be pretty much empty since the pc is a long way from being completed, you can see the outside look, which is what this thread was about anyway
