Good question. Games that use PhysX (with effects) are actually using two separate physics simulations, one on the CPU for gameplay physics, and the other on the GPU (effects only). I don't see how a game using only CPU PhysX can affect an Nvidia machine differently than an AMD machine.

In fact, I wrote a game engine a couple years back that used CPU-only PhysX and the physics time required was the same regardless of the GPU.

PhysX can run entirely on the CPU. If it only ran on Nvidia GPUs then nobody could play games that used PhysX as the physics engine.

I understand the difference between Physics (the laws), and PhysX (the middleware). I've written software that runs on PhysX, and other physics engines, like Havok, and JigLibX.

The offloading of some of the physics calculations, refers to the effects that you see when using Nvidia GPUs, that is only a small subset of the whole of PhysX, specifically, effects that are visual only and do not affect gameplay. If the GPU was running the gameplay physics you would have to wait 2-3 frames for an input response after trying to move your character, as that is how long it would take to send that off to the GPU and come back. Additionally, you can't write code that makes a physics change and then immediately queries it if you're running the simulation on the GPU, because the query itself would take 2-3 frames.

Havok was headed toward this same concept up until they were purchased by Intel (a CPU company), it was called HavokFX.

Lol and nvidia doesn't have driver issues? The card has been out a month and you already want perfection on every game. Most people with so called driver issues have other problems causing their issues. There is a large group of people having no problems what so ever. Trust me I want Nvidia but right now what choice do you have to get top end performance? A overpriced 580 that's 25% slower then a 7970 that equals its price.
