OC a Sapphire HD5870 - Page 2

I've set it to go like 70% speed when the temp hits 70/75 ºC. Then when it gets to 80 ºC it's working at 100% speed. Still my temps are around 80-85 ºC in FurMark tests after about 10 minutes test.
Either way, can you tell me how to set the speed of the fans for these temps or can you show me your graph?
Thank you.

I wasn't referring to your fan speed as the main problem here.

If you click on "user defined software automatic fan speed" in MSI Afterburner, it will automatically create a fan profile for you - which you can adjust accordingly to your needs. I've been using that with my CFX 5870's, and now with my GTX580.

I was trying to use MSI Afterburner but the voltage control is locked. That made me use Sapphire Trixx. Either way I've got a problem; when I use FurMark to test and it gives artifacts it doesn't show only the artifacts. It also crashes the whole PC sometimes. I'm using CCC v11.8 because v11.10 freezes in BF3 and v12.1 (latest) doesn't even open the CCC UI when I ask too.

Either way, I'm using a custom fan profile in Sapphire Trixx that puts the fan at 100% when it reaches 67 degrees. I'm afraid that I can't lower anymore the voltage because it gets unstable and therefore my temps won't go down. I really would like to maintain the temperature in 75 degrees in full load and still be able to bump the GPU and the memory clock. How can I achieve that without problems to the hardware?

1. Don't use furmark. This program is crap and won't assure you the card will be stable in game.
2. No need overclocking past 1300Mhz the memory.
3. Memory will hold you back when you will try to overclock past 1000MHz so I suggest you to first test with only 1200mhz memory clock to see how far you can go on the core.
4. Overclocking the card past 1000mhz requires a looooot of voltage. I suggest you to overclock the card only if you really need to (ie: keep fps at a minimum of 30).

I personally test my card with unigine benchmark. I used furmark and all it does is overheating your card and prematuraly tear it. You will damage your card using this program. I advise you to uninstall this crap ASAP! Test in game or with benchmark. Furmark is worthless.

Thank you for the reply! With stock voltage and stock memory I can't get past 900Mhz without artifacts in FurMark. But I guess I should try the program you said. Should I bump first the memory clock or the voltage when the card gets unstable after bumping the GPU clock?

I said memory will hold you! Better keep the memory at stock and check what is your max clock for the core. Like this you can take the memory out of the equation.

I strongly suggest you to test the card with a game. Game > benchmark
I prefer testing first with benchmark because you can let it run and rapidly see if it has a chance to be stable but it won't guarantee you to be stable in game! Since you are overclocking to play a game at higher settings or just to get a minimum of 30 FPS, it makes more sense to actually test in game if it is stable!

I am using this. Windowed mode so you can easily adjust frequency & voltage!

With GPUs and CPUs alike, your mileage may vary. I've had 2 XFX 5870s in CFX for 2 years and the max I can get out of them with decent temp are 945/1300@1.2v. I've ran endless benches and like Just a nickname has said, the best way to test them is play a graphic intense game. Happy OC'ing.

Many people talk about bumping it up to 1Ghz GPU clock. How is that possible with stock cooling? I've only bumped to 930/1300 and I'm still not fully stable even at 1.25v! Over that, the nearly finished 15 minute 1920x1080 test from FurMark already sent my temps to aprox 80/82 degrees! My room is not that hot and the card had its thermal paste changed a few days ago.
Am I doing anything wrong?
Thank you for reading.

Doesn't sound like quite an overclocker. Maybe you should clean it up a little bit:D

Thank you again. I'll do it as you say when I get home and I'll give some feedback. Either way, I don't think I'll get stability even at 930Mhz. Should I try and re-update my drivers? Can it influence the OC and the artifacts shown?

Yea it can help but I don't think you will see any difference if you re install the same one. I heard 11.10 was really stable.

I don't know why, but when I install v11.10 of CCC I play BF3 and I get a lot of PC freezes. I guess it's a problem of the game but I really would like to play it.
