What Monitor Would You Recommend For Me

First off I will say that I'm a gamer but that I also thoroughly enjoy movies and a nice picture. I watch all types of movies and I play all types of games, I play FPS's -> MMO's -> everything in between. So you probably guessed I'm torn between IPS and 120hz, I enjoy playing games but I'm not one to think 1fps will make or break my game. I also enjoy having a good picture but I'm not a color snob nor do I rely on correct colors to make a living.

The budget is $350 ABSOLUTE MAX

Any screen 22" or bigger is fine as long as it's 1080p if 120hz is the best choice for me.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions. thumb.gif

this has been asked a lot...i feel like i have written this about a hundred times...but here we go again...

Samsung s23a750D for $299 or s27a750D for $399 at tigerdirect...once it's back in stock next week. Overall, if you are a gamer with a decent rig.. you want 120hz (especially if you play shooters). IPS is also nice (i have both)..but I use 120hz for gaming..image quality and colors are great on samsung also. you might also want to consider BenQ XL2420T (24") for $399...tho i haven't done much research on it.

That's where I'm stuck though, I don't play shooters a lot. I mostly play other games, more than anything I play TF2 and CS:S more than BF3. Now I'm on a WoW kick again. Also I really don't want to go over my $350 budget.

I find that odd since I hate Dell as a company overall. I still wouldn't throw them out of the list of possibilities because I have heard great things about their monitors only.

i consider TS2 and CS:S shooters...

120hz will look better in all games imo...the main advantage of IPS is screen ratio (16:10), colors, image quality, and viewing angles. The Samsung 120hz I mentioned has very comparable colors..and image quality is just as good. I don't really care about the viewing angle...its good enough..never had a problem (i don't sit at a weird angle)...it is better for gaming than my IPS tho. It's easier to focus...less tearing/blurriness when screen image changes fast... it's also a lot more responsive than my IPS.

MMOs would be nice on 16:10 (like 1200p)...but they would also be nice on a 27" 120hz (1080p) imo...

If I had to pick 1 monitor..i would probably go with Samsung 27" 750D as long as you have desk space to push it back (or else you eyes will probably hurt). Otherwise the 23" version is just as good (better image quality, smaller pixels than 27"). I personally wouldn't use IPS for gaming if had a 120hz sitting next to it (especially if you graphic card can push 75+ fps)..tho super high resolution 1440p IPS might be nice for MMOs.

In CS and TS2 im sure you get a lot more than 60fps...in that case...i think you should really consider 120hz.

Thanks for all the input guys, I just personally think there is more to the matter of this. Looked at some polls previously and more people preferred IPS's over 120hz. You're just making it sound like all you're gaining is retail space and the colors aren't very different than a normal monitor. I'd say about 15% of my gaming time is on FPS's, I heard that's where a lot of 120hz monitors shine but I just don't spend that much time playing them is all. Do they make that much of a difference outside of FPS's? I know with the IPS I would be enjoying the colors 100% of the time, but it comes down to everyday use.

people will poll whatever they own...they are all bias...IPS was the big thing for a while until 120hz came around..and now there is a good 50/50 divide. I have both (bought IPS first, than 120hz)...so let me put this in another way for you...

Note: This is comparison is for IPS vs 120hz...but comments are for HP zr24w (IPS, 1200p) vs Samsung 750D (120hz, 1080p) only.

Size/Ratio: IPS 16:10 > 120hz 16:9 ...16:10 is especially nice for web/work..screen size is basically perfect for me.
Gaming: 120hz > IPS...the difference is noticeable during "action"..it's smoother/cleaner.
Image Quality: IPS > 120hz (however, Samsung 750D is one of the few TN panels that are very similar..its VERY GOOD...I would even say just a tad bit better than my HP IPS)
Colors: IPS > 120hz (however, Samsung 750D is one of the few TN panels that are very similar in colors..i can't really tell which is better; tho i am sure IPS is..it's not noticeable enough)
Viewing Angles: IPS > 120hz (however, this feature is mute... Samsung viewing angles are quite good for TN..and you won't have any issues unless you play at very sharp angles. IPS angles are insanely good tho...)

Do they make that much of a difference outside of FPS's? The faster the screen changes...the more you will notice the difference.. ie: "action". The image will remain more intact/cleaner on 120hz TN than on 60hz IPS. How much of a difference? No idea...too many variables...I have just been playing BF3 since I got my 120hz...and it's smoother and easier to focus with than my IPS. I don't know about other game types..but it should help overall with all games, especially if you are getting over 60fps (you eyes will notice). My primary pc usage is gaming..so if you want the best experience..I would say a good quality 120hz is the way to go.

I would say 750D is a unique/special monitor (it is not "normal")...its a very high-end TN panel..compared to most TN monitors.. Compared to like 95% of other 120hz/60hz TN panels..Samsung 750D is a lot better than them..and can rival some IPS in colors (unlike most TN panels)...you won't really notice a difference unless you are really trying to look for a difference (ie: your anal or your into photography).

If I could have an ideal monitor it would probably be dual screens with 1200p 24" 120hz monitor (Samsung 750D quality or better)...so take that for whatever it is.

OK im done...you decide and pick whatever you want...to each his own. I haven't tried 120hz with other game genres..so I can not 100% for sure say 60hz IPS is inferior in those game types...but most games I play...I think I would notice a difference. Most games don't work like slide shows...hehehe...

Im going to go against the 120hz thing.
But thats because I have never seen any noticeable difference in games or media that leads me to believe that double the refresh rate, and nearly double the price is worth it in anything. And you still miss out on the color quality.
It seems to be a subjective distinction.
And that means its not worth dropping $300+ on something that has a 50/50 chance of not being what you want.

Hanns-G makes a good non-IPS monitor.
Dell makes a fantastic IPS display.
Hanns-G or Dell are my recommendations.

That's where this is hard because it's involving two very visual experiences that I can't see, only read about. I wish I could see that samsung and an IPS side by side for comparison. Unfortunately there are no stores around where I live like that. Since I'm playing WoW a bit more now I'm kind of torn and it already seems smooth as is.
