So HP sent me the wrong laptop and I'm debating on returning it.

Thread Starter
Around two weeks ago I ordered myself a new laptop that I customized on HP's website. It's the Pavilion dv6z Quad edition with an AMD A8-3550MX, a Radeon HD 7690M for the graphics, and 6GB RAM. I received it yesterday and was working on getting all of the bloatware off when late last night I was looking over a few things and something seemed wrong.

When I checked device manager, it said my integrated adapter is the Radeon HD 6620G, but for my dedicated graphics card it just says Radeon 6600M and 6700M Series. Confused by this, I checked the hardware section of the Control Center, and it states the same thing (that I just have Radeon 6600M and 6700M Series) but it revealed to me that the Core Clock is 600MHz and that the Memory Clock is 800MHz., and that it has 1GB GDDR5 RAM.

Obviously this isn't what I ordered, so after spending 2 hours on the phone today with clueless HP Customer Support representatives they told me that I can return the laptop and that they'll "fix it". Part of me says that I payed extra for the HD 7690M and I should get what I payed for. But going through the return process would mean another month with my old extremely slow laptop, which I hate dealing with.

So I have a couple of questions. Firstly, what the heck in inside my laptop? I don't even know how to turn the dedicated GPU on to see what it is in Dxdiag or anything else. Secondly, if we figure out what graphics card is in my laptop, what kind of performance difference will there be between what I have now and a HD 7690M? I don't plan on gaming heavily on this laptop, but I'd like to play SWTOR and maybe even Skyrim if it'll run decently enough.

Thanks in advance for any help, it's been a while since I've been on OCN but this was the best place to come when I was building my desktop several years ago.

I'm afraid I can't answer any of your questions, but you should truly get what you payed for, even if it isn't much of a difference. Can't you try and get a discount on your current laptop that would be equal to the extra $$ you paid for the GPU? I know it might be a longshot, but hey, its worth a try thumb.gif

Start--Control Panel--Device manager. GPU model should be listed.

Dude, get what you paid for. Don't let HP scam you. If you don't want to be without your laptop you could demand payment for the difference in price.

They might go for this but they would probably need to see the laptop anyway to make sure you aren't trying to so a switch on them.

You should find out if the 7690M is compatable with your current laptop and maybe you can sweet talk them into just sending you one. Pretty easy to change it out.

Regardless of anything. I would make sure your warranty is valid. I mean...watch you have problems down the road and they won't help you because your laptop is not what is on the Warranty info.

Like everyone else said.
Return it and get the laptop you paid for.

From just quickly google a second looks like the HD 7690m is a rebadged HD6770m so CP might see it as that intead of 7690m.

And not sure about the lappy side but desktop side the APU's will not work with anything above 6670 level. But not sure what translates to what on the lappy side of things.

I would get gpu-z and see if you can dig up the chips specs, if they match the 7690m but is listed as a 6700 series no biggie in my book, kinda like a 4550 always being seen as a 4350.

Should have figured these would be the responses I get from a community based on performance biggrin.gif.

Like I said I've already initiated the return process (I'll probably get around to it tomorrow or Friday) but I just wanted to see if anyone could clarify what I actually had and if there would be a significant performance difference.

This is pretty much all I could find out about it. Anyone with any ideas?

If it's better than the one you ordered, keep. If not, return.
