So HP sent me the wrong laptop and I'm debating on returning it. - Page 2

Return it, get what you paid for, and demand a rebate/discount for wasting your time, also don't let them make you pay shipping for sending it back. Make some noise, threaten a BBB complaint, demand to talk to higher level customer support reps, just don't sit down and take it.

I would get gpu-z and see if you can dig up the chips specs, if they match the 7690m but is listed as a 6700 series no biggie in my book, kinda like a 4550 always being seen as a 4350.
This. Before we all fly off the handle blaming HP's supposed incompetence (oh wait, everyone already did...), check it. I've dealt with people on the Sims 3 forums asking about updating their ATI drivers for their laptops and the wording or numbers or series or whatever would sometimes change when they did so. It seems ATI's driver identification naming is too broad and inconsistent, more so with mobile or renamed chipsets. Check with GPU-Z or something and see if the specifications match up, because it's probably what's going on and you probably did get the right stuff.

Geez, first off understand what you even got.

So far the data doesn't even point to a dedicated gfx, all is showing APU info it looks like.

Please, grab GPU-z and give us a screen shot of that, changing window showing each gpu information page.

As said, a 7690M is a 6770 with a 100MHz higher clock, so it may just be the drivers reflecting the 6700 showing in DM. A simplie driver update may fix it or show different.

Also, I agree if it isn't what you paid for then yes send it back, but you don't even fully know what you have there.

Totally forgot about GPU-Z, here's what it says.

I'm checking it with what this site says are the specs of the 7690M, some of them seem to line up but the GPU name and Memory Type seem to be wrong.

EDIT: And here's the GPU-Z for the other GPU

Definitely the same GPU, the "G" in GDDR3/5 stands for graphics. So, don't worry about the Memory type.

Thank you for the gpu-z screens, that helps a ton.

The only thing to go by are the clocks and the stated clocks are wrong for it to be a HD 7690M. However since the physical hardware is the same you have two optinos as I would see it.

1st is you could if you wanted contact HP and try to get the difference in price credited back to you along with changing the warranty information for future warranty repairs. With this option it eliminates having to ship back and go without your new lappy. You can also bump the clocks up to the 725MHz yourself and essentially get the same thing you wanted for cheaper.

2nd would be to continue with the RMA and have HP replace your lappy with the correct one allowing however many weeks that will take while essentially getting the same hardware you have now just more official so to speak.

Yes, it appears HP made a mistake which is probably an honest one with them trying to use their inventory of 6770m's with a bios update showing a 7690m.

But at least you have clarification of what you actually have now. Which doesn't paint the picture as bad, but bad still none the less.

Edit: another option if you felt up to it would be to update drivers and see if it recognizes it as a 7690m and sets appropriate clocks. Small but plausible chance if those are dated drivers that came on it.

I've tried updating the drivers 3 times so far, and each time during the installation my display just shuts off indefinitely. I've let it sit for 25 minutes and nothing has happened. Anyone know what's up with this problem?

The computer is still on and functioning from what I can tell. I can turn the touchpad on and off and Windows makes the appropriate noise, the screen is just unresponsive.

I tried updating the drivers twice with the file I downloaded off of AMD"s website, and once using Device Manager's "Update Driver" option.

If they sent you the wrong one, then request a return (but don't make a big fit over it over it or they won't want to make it a good experience because at this point, it's probably an honest mistake). If it all matches up besides the clock speeds though, did you try loading it to see if they go up or down?

As for the drivers, some models need proprietary drivers written for them my the manufacturer. You can't always use reference drivers. This is more true with mobile/laptops PCs.
