[LAT] Star Wars: The Old Republic Snags 1.7 million Subscribers - Page 4

EA spent $100million on advertising BF3 and SWTOR. No clue if that was 50/50 spent or not.

I cancelled my subscription before my 30 day trial was up. I reached 50 relatively quickly and was a little disappointed with how little was "new" to me, having played WoW for years. I was hoping that the Star Wars aesthetic would make this game a little more interesting for me, but it didn't do much. I realize the game is very young, however, and there might be much more to come, but I don't see myself subscribing again anytime soon.

I waited until the end of my 30 days before i put it in and was never prevented from playing the game so if they say they have 1.7million who have put in their CC info and authorized payment then they have that many active subscribers who actually plan on paying for the monthly fee and playing.

Nah bro your definitely required to put your CC info in. Trust me I was mad when they made me do it in order to launch the game.

Anyway and maybe this is fanboy drivel but I think it's sad that this game is more popular then other mmos out there. There really are some pretty good MMOs out currently that just don't get much attention due to WoW and Star Wars.

And on the vanilla wow talk I loved WoW during vanilla. MC/BWL/AQ/Naxx I felt like there was plenty of content unless you were on the absolute 30-40 hour a week raid top-end. Burning Crusade ruined the game for me.

Actually, you are wrong. You need payment info on file to play.

1.7ml subscribers @ $15 monthly = $306,000,000 year... 2ml people bought the game at an average of $54 a game. Equaling $108,000,000 in sales. It cost $200,000,000 to make the game. That's $214,000,000 profit in the first year.

IF

They keep all those subs for the entire year, and they rise, not fall.

Chances are it'll fall to 500,000-700,000 mid-year, which is still very good, but cost wise, they might panic.

I've been playing since early access, and have had lvl 50 for 2-3 weeks now. my number one complaint is pvp, I have a 1090t @4Ghz and 560ti @ 970mhz, performance for open world pvp is still terrible, when there are around 50 players on screen my fps is 15 average, sometimes dipping below 10. My friend has an i7 2600k and gtx580 and has the same issue with open pvp. some rumor was floating around the bioware forums, in order to for EA and Lucas arts to "protect content" they have stored many of the game textures serverside, and those encrypted textures stream live to the client , I guess there is a big hang time before the textures get to your gpu. so it could be some sort of evil DRM implemented by EA, or maybe the heroes engine is just too old for this type of game. They need to patch the netcode or get rid of the drm. otherwise swtor is doomed to become a 4 player RPG game.

Err, voice acted in the sense that only rare main storyline cut scenes have it (probably about 1% of the game's dialogue, I forgot it had it until you reminded me) and story driven in the sense that there's some main storyline missions to do in between level grinding and guild leves. I wouldn't say your post is incorrect, but I would say FFXIV has these features in the most loose way possible.

I hope that the success of SWTOR continues. It's a fantastic breath of fresh air in a WoW-centric MMO world. Not so much for the gameplay, but for the immersive storyline, extensive voice acting, and epic environments/ambiance/soundtrack. I'm paid up through April, and I intend to stay with it.
