[LAT] Star Wars: The Old Republic Snags 1.7 million Subscribers - Page 8

The Voice Acting was meh in the end. Heard a lot of the same speech files repeatedly from my character.

"Sounds dangerous! I'll do it."

I can't tell you how sick I am of hearing that bit of dialogue. They probably should have not bothered adding voice to every minor character and instead added more for the main storyline and more diverse dialogue especially from our characters.

The Modern Warfare series alone has innovated more over the past 5 years than the entire MMO genre.

thats a joke right? modern warfare has done the same game 5 years str8 what lol?

this is a fact about wow and wow style mmo. its a scripted game. you rely on content to keep you interested. there is no form of self sustaining content that you get from pvp games of which naturally generate said content from the dif interaction between humans and other humans

for an mmo to become popular it needs to shed the player vs environment shell and step into player vs players effect on environment

true except eve online doesnt have a character you control similar to wow no? isnt it text based. but as you said its a testament to the power of what players can generate in a dynamic player driven content game.

i want a hero based mmo style game thats easier to get into (eve is far from easy to get into) and still generates content in a similar fashion. sad part is companys do "what is already proven" hence the literal copy of wow with swotr. if these ******* who back video games had any vision we would see an amazing game that would be impossible to beat because you cannot beat human interaction

Annnd Unfortunately nobody wants to innovate because nobody wants to fail. Or those who have tried and failed don't have money and/or passion to try again. Look at FFXI(11). Perfect example. Flew under the radar. For it's first year it was in Japan only, and had so many bugs and such, characters had to be wiped. Then it released in 2002 for North America. Over it's lifespan the core gameplay mechanics -forced- grouping/grinding for experience points, harsh drop rates for rare items, notorious monsters(bosses) that spawn in the wild, with no instancing so you'd have several linkshells(guilds) crammed into the area waiting for it to spawn, then attempt to claim it first by attacking first. Through all that lag. Anyway. At the end of the day/week/month/year, when you hit your goal, it was an accomplishment that felt like no other. It took you so long to get there, all but the strongest friendships and kindest, most respectful souls failed. The Chains of Promathia expansion pack released in 2004 and until battle system adjustments in 2008~ish? or later..; there were many people who simply could not complete the first and second set of missions because of the difficulty and level of coordination required between the 6 person parties you are limited to in the game. There was very little content you could do as a PUG(pick up group, random people). Outside of grinding for exp, that is.

What you earned was nothing but great friends and foes along the way with getting the loot you wanted to get the levels you wanted. No guides or hints or tricks were hard-coded into the game. Players had to discover it and eventually several websites had to be formed to store it all. NPC's didn't tell you ' you need X item or this land is lost forever!!'. Hell, part of CoP(chains of promathia) you're in an alternate plane of existance(for lack of further explanation) and there are floating islands connected by semi-collapsed portals, of which can only be opened by targetting and trading dragonscales, of which there is no documentation. No phrase uttered by any NPC, nor text nor random scratching into a stone for any purpose does it say what to do. Many quests are really close to that. In the end, you didn't play FFXI to get loot and get rich. You played to reach goals and have adventures and interactions of all sorts with people along the way.

I never played EQ1/2 or anything before FFXI, but have since played Pirates of the Burning Sea, Rift, WoW, and just started the trial period of SWTOR and everything in every MMO I've seen mention of since, does the same thing. Holds your hand. Makes solo content the priority with group content a gimmik or not proportionally more rewarding until you hit end-game. For those of you who have started MMOs with WoW and have done end-game, you know what I mean. You have people who have no idea how to use their character or even gear their character in a group setting because they just solo'd or played with friends where skill or communication was as foreign a concept as the concept of 11 dimensions.

tl:dr rant about ffxi being hard but rewarding, every other MMO things handed to u on silver platter no difficulty ever since WoW and it's clones plague the MMO genre. Just started SWTOR's trial.

We need innovation. We need difficulty. We need a larger percentage of content that MUST be done in groups, and not so easy that one person or two people can drag the rest of the group through.

i agree and i disagree

group mechanics should never be a foundation. groups should help, key word HELP. you should not NEED groups to enjoy the game. while 25man and 10man group content can surely be required to do some content it cannot be the MAIN focus of EVERY point in a game. furthermore when you have a 1 track mind you run into hardcore and casual. these 2 terms define games. if your goal in a game is 1 fold then you need to make everyone able to do said content. if your goal in a game is multifaceted then you can make things harder and others easier.

you said ppl dont have the money or passion to try again? i think its more of a lack of talent. this worlds full of talent and the talentless and as elitist as this sounds its a fact that will eventually be solved when the right people get into the right spots but currently we are at a generational crux where the older generation gamers are in seats of power making games they thought would be cool when they were 18 and we are the next gen of innovation that needs to take over. these guys dont know **** about **** and lack the talent needed to innovate currently or else it would be done already. how many years has wow been out? where is a steve jobs of gaming who just builds better mouse traps? did steve jobs make the phone? no he just made a BETTER PHONE and to beat wow you just need a BETTER wow not the same thing. even that requires little innovation but would be received with joy and praise of which imo would still be undeserving.

face a fact of gaming today, we lack a truly great game that you can consistently play and those that are happy with what exists atm only need be shown what they are missing to share a similar thought. you cannot miss what you never had

didnt say it was text based per say. i most likely shoulda elaborated but my point was the gameplay was slower paced and more geared towards the values of text rather then the actual fighting itself

for example in super smash bros its not about how a charged over a move does 40 but more so the speed of the attack how it works etc etc. in wow you have fast paced pvp action (skilless now but i digress) im just saying eve isnt that in your face fighting mmo i want personally

eve might be one of the only games to have these style currently but its not even close to being what games SHOULD be doing atm
