Help! Extremely strange 6950 Fan Behavior

Thread Starter
My Asus 6950 DCII makes a very strange metallic grinding sound, but only within a very narrow range of fan speeds.

Here's what happens:

Normal sound at 0-49% fan speed

Strange metallic grinding sound from 50-52% fan speed

Normal again from 53-100% fan speed

In the video below, the first ~6 seconds are at 49% fan speed (Via MSI Afterburner), followed by 50%, 51%, 52%, and the last few seconds are at 53%. The fan noise is totally normal at 49% and 53%, but it makes a grinding sound from 50-52%.

Can anyone help me with this problem?

not 100% sure, but it sounds like the bearings are going in one or both of the fans. Changing fan settings is never "recommended" because it can to premature damage to fans, but then again you don't want your card to melt. I'd say try get a new one if it's under warranty, but if you monitor your temps and they seem fine, then i wouldnt worry about it. Just keep your fans at 49% which is cool enough for that card. I have a reference 6950 2gb with unlocked shaders and 6970 clocks and the highest i set my fan to is 50% during BF3 and the temps are fine.

I'd recommend not creating a custom fan curve in MSI AB and instead manually bump the fan speed before you go in game.
