SLI 580s : ok to mix 1.5 GB varieties with 3 GB?

HI!

Currently I have a Zotac GTX 580 AMP2! 3 GB...this takes up a triple slot, which is perfect as I have an ASUS P8Z68-V Pro motherboard who's first PCIe slot is a triple one...however with my soundcard and wireless network card, I only have room for a double slot video card mad.gif

Most of the 3 GB 580s that are easily available (for the right price) to me in Australia are a minimum of 2.5 slot, apart from the MSI Lightning XE 3 GB which is moderately expense...

...however there are plenty of very well priced 580s available, the problem being that they are only 1.5 GB variants...

...so...I guess I'm asking whether there is much of a problem mixing 1.5 GB & 3 GB varieties in SLI configuration?!?

Currently I'm only using a single 1080p monitor, so a 3 GB framebuffer is pretty much overkill..and to be honest, I'm not likely to be buying a 2nd & 3rd monitor or 1600p monitor any time soon...however it would be a terrible shame to skimp on a 1.5 GB card if games in the future are going to be requiring more memory!!!

cheers, krs

It will work but only 1536 MB will be usable. so it is kind of like you wasted your money on your current card. as half of the memory won't be detected because of the 1.5 GB card.

According to this: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=964368
You cannot.

This is from nVidia:
Can I mix and match graphics cards with different sizes of memory?
No. For example, an XXXGT 512MB cannot be paired with a XXXGT 1GB in an SLI configuration.

People are mixxed.

But the statement above from nVidia..
I's say no.

No....the problem your having is your trying to "fool" your Cards into thinking there running in proper Quad SLi using an ancient nv Program like Coolbits (I used to use this Program back in 2004 to OC my AGP 6800GT Card), your crippling your Registry in a big way!
