I shut everything off thinking that maybe a compression fitting on my water cooling loop came off. Looked around, didn't see any orange coolant, but did notice something white in the lower part of my pedestal. After pulling it out, I realized it was a fan blade.

Don't really need it, and I was going to pull all the stock 140mm fans out anyway and replace them with orange fans anyway, but it was the strangest thing to happen to a computer that wasn't being worked on and just sitting there running.

...but if your fan went bad, just make a RMA on it and get a new one either by your vendor or by by NZXT directly wink.gif

Not me... I am actually pleasantly surprised by the quality of the included fans, especially when compared to the fans that other manufacturers typically include in their cases. The specs (NZXT RF-FN140RB) seem to be pretty close to spot-on, the fit-and-finish is above average, and they move a good amount of air while being fairly quiet about it.

HOWEVER... They are SLEEVE bearing fans, so they do require some attention.

First off, running them horizontally (parallel to the floor) will "kill" them much more quickly than any other orientation.

Next, you need to actually take care to re-lubricate the fans on occasion; it's also possible that they came from the factory lacking sufficient lubricant (it IS a mass-produced item, and mistakes happen). What I do is instead of using Multi-Purpose Oil/Grease or Gun Grease, I actually use REAL synthetic motor oil (Group IV or Group V; i.e. PAO or Ester-based oil), specifically Royal Purple 5W30/5W40 or Redline 5W30/5W40, and so long as the fan is relatively new, you can just add 2-3 small drips into the bearing and you will have a fan that runs more quietly, has much less resistance to movement, and whose lubricity doesn't change anywhere near as fast. The reason I specify Group4 or 5 oils is that they are true synthetics, so unlike Group3 "Synthetics" (Mobil1, Pennzoil, Castrol, etc; the US is the only country that allows these to be called "full synthetic", btw), they contain ZERO Dino Juice, instead being entirely man-made. They tend to have much better lubrication properties than any other type of oil when under significant pressure, friction, or heat as they don't shear or break down anywhere near as quickly as Dino oils do (or mineral oils). They also have an inherent ability to clean any surface they touch, despite not being loaded up with detergents; the organic compounds they are made from make this possible.
The result is that I have a dozen 80mm and 92mm fans from 2003 that all still work 100% perfectly! Not even a hint of black gooey gunk in the bearings, and I only "change the oil" in my fans every year or two. The PAO/Ester oils also have amazing protection properties, and thus the bearings don't wear down at a detectable rate, even over the course of a decade.

I figure, if it's good enough for my ~500rwhp fully-built track-and-some-street supercharged 328Ci, it's good enough for my fans wink.gif

Yup, that was me.

I had one just up and "explode" on me awhile back. I wasn't even inside the computer, I was just playing a video game when it threw a fan blade.

Then a couple days ago, I was messing with my case while it was on and I lightly touched one of the fans while it was spinning (same case) and it too threw a fan blade. I mean I could see it if I hit it with such force that it actually hurt my finger, but I barely even felt it.

I don't know if it was just a defective batch or something (it was my newest Switch 810 case), but the 140mm fans in my first Switch 810 haven't had a single issue and it's been up and running 24/7 for 5 months now. The newest case (the one with 2 fan issues) is only 3 months old.

I'd contact Xnine or NZXT, but to me it isn't worth the trouble. It gave me a good excuse to buy 3 orange Cougar 140mm fans that match my 6 orange Cougar 120mm fans that are in that case. biggrin.gif

I have 6 of that fans running in my switch. First I had 2 of them in the front intake (upright), 1 on the hdd cage (upright) and 3 in the top (horizontal). the 3 upright mounted ones was totally quiet. Now I have mounted all of them to my 420 rad in the top and I find they start making a little ratteling noise.
Can you guys tell me which fans are good for horizontal mounting? Please don't say Bgears as I would have to order them from the US to Europe^^
Not gonna to order new fans right now, but planning little in the future as I know they won't last forever smile.gif

Edit:
...really like the look of the Bitfenix spectre Pro, but don't know much about the quality, especially not about their bearings....

from what ive gathered, akasa 140mm viper. seem to have great static pressure and cfm, pretty good noise dba, and 4pin pwm. im getting these over the bgears simply because the specs is as good, only quieter. still, you can't rely on the manufacturers specs. i guess ill have to see/hear it for myself. oh and its yellow, so it may be a turn off for some. idc tho

Hey guys, just received my Switch 810 white and everything is fine, installed the components, but there are 2 leds that doesn't light up, the LED in the mobo where you plug the USB mouse, keyboard, DVI etc and the light in the front panel, the left one smaller than the other, I already pressed the LED in front panel and the led doesn't light back there, is there any thing I am missing to plug or my case is ''broke''? thumb.gif

Most likely you need to plug in the power connector for the LED panel. It's a black wire that has a SATA power connector on it.

Just plug that into an open SATA power cable that goes to your power supply.
