I turned up channel 1...its all good, turned up channel 2...a ok, turned up channel 3 and heard a loud POP and instantly smelled something burning so I killed the power. Pulled out the controller and here is what I found

Lemme guess, you got a G-Vans unit?

No, its a lamptron. I just unhooked all the fans and tried only the 4 fans that I had on channel 3. I hooked them up to channel 4 and poof...instant meltdown. Then I unhooked 2 of those fans and tried it on channel 2 and poof instant meltdown. So now I only have a single channel that might work. I'm wondering if the 4-1 Y-cable is at fault here?

I just tried a different y-cable on channel 1 (last channel that might have worked) but the fan controller is totally pooched so now I can't troubleshoot it . I just phoned to get the RMA process started.

Do you have a multimeter, that's pretty catastophic failure, indicative of a dead short. I'd definately suspect the cable, especially if you know the fans all ran fine before trying them on the controller. Check the cable for a short, probably at the "Y" if it's a 1 in with 4 out "Y".

I'm worried about frying my psu or something now.

Yeah it looks like its not taking the extra load , its not so much a 4 channel controller as a 4 fan controller , its probably not rated to take that much current at all. its only rated for 20 W per channel . I dont know what each of your fans are in watts but 20 W sure isnt a whole lot , 2 might have been the limit at high settings for that controller.

I don't think that is the problem, 20W should be enough. They are only about 2W per fan maybe a little more so even the 6 fans on the same channel wouldn't max it out. It was only 4 fans on the same y-cable that toasted channels 3 and 4. Then 2 fans on that same cable toasted channel 2 and now channel 1 won't work either.

Yeah I dont know what popped , we can see pins but thats not a current limiter and I dont think the capacitors blew ,not from an overload anyways.. hard to see what that even is , a current limiter with heat dispenser ? IT Diva should know , you should see some of the circuits , speaking of which hows that pump controller working out.

It'd be nice if there was a switch 810 picture gallery so we could go through and view pics of people's setups without having to scroll through so many posts.
