Slow Performance due to HDD?

Hello,

I built my computer last month and can run games very well. However I noticed some freezing when opening programs like firefox or taking a long time to load or cant click anything on my screen for a couple of seconds.

Here are my specs:

8GB RAM DDR3 1600
Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost)
Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB Sata 6 7200RPM
ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
HD Radeon 6870 1GB
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Also, all i really have is skype, battlefield 3 and GTA. No mods or anything. I hardly download stuff and haven't used much of my space.

Could the slow performance be caused by my CPU or HDD? and if it's a HDD problem, would upgrading to a Caviar black help?

By any chance does this happen to you right after you boot up the computer? The slowness and that occurs just after booting up a computer is normal, what ever you are trying to load has to wait in line behind all of the processes the computer needs to load in the background. The hard drive can only load so much so fast.

It takes 40 seconds to boot up then it freezes a little after that but it still freezes/goes slow when I do stuff like click on start, open web browsers, etc.

Does it run slow even after waiting about 30-40 seconds after logging into windows? That is to say, as the desktop loads? And also, how slow does it run? how long does it take to load, say, IE, FireFox, Chrome, or whatever browser you are using?

Mine is the same way, my HDD is getting slower and slower....

Takes FOREVER to load maps in games. Defraging dose nothing. Its a green so its slow as it is, and i have had windows installed for at least 2 years with no clean swipes. So that adds to it, either way its an ancient piece.

I think... I'll just upgrade to a Caviar black.
