Need to change MAC address, how to? Problem Solved!

Long story short I need to get a new MAC address, which is regulated by my cable modem. I am pretty positive that I cannot change it with the modem I currently have, but my question is would getting a new modem from Comcast get me a new mac address? Also will comcast give me a new modem?

Is there any other way to change my mac address? From what I've been able to tell spoofing and other methods won't work with modems because the number is hardwired to the modem.

Depending which OS youre using, you can spoof your own MAC on your computer. WIndows can't. As far as changing it on your modem, don't think so since they are usually specific to each device. But getting a new modem would get you a new MAC. On a question, why would you need to change your MAC? Have you been doing naughty things on the internet?biggrin.gif

Mac addresses are specific to individual devices aren't they? Anyways, I know with backtrack ( a linux distribution) you can spoof your mac address. From the sound of things, you should have been doing that to begin with, lol. is the problem with your router, modem, or individual computer?

Edit: you can go buy yourself a new modem from the store. If it supports Docsis 3.0 there is also a chance you can get yourself a speed boost and a new mac on the modem too!

Long story short I got an extremely unfair Ebay suspension for listing books on half.com as "very good" when they had mylar covers. Had 198 violations in one day and half.com banned me from all buying and selling on half and ebay.

I live in a house with several people, and anyone connecting from the same modem will get banned as well, so looking to change my mac address. Also my gf wants to be able to buy off ebay again.

Do you think I would be able to ask comcast for a new modem, or do I need to smash it and call customer support?

If I buy a new modem, will it work in place of my old one, or do I need comcasts support? Also can you recommend a good one, or are they all mostly the same?

You can change your MAC via Windows Powershell, there's a slew of scripts out there that will do it for you. My favorite was McMKUP, but it looks like that project is offline.

Edit... whoops, changing the MAC on your ISP-provided router is a different trick altogether. It'd be easier to accidentally let its smoke out and have them supply a new one.

Mmmm I dunno if this breaks ToS helping you like this since you're trying to bypass something, even though its for a good reason.

But i'm a rule bypasser sometimes, so ya follow what hte above said, break one or buy one. And setup is not too hard, you do have to call your ISP and get the information for the modem, but thats not too bad.

If I bring it to them and tell them I it isn't working will they replace it for free? Or what do I have to tell them to get them to replace it for free?

I thought you could only spoof mac address's not change them. Aren't they specific to a single device?
