nah, keep both 460 and upgrade later to a bigger nvidia card
  • 100% (8)
yeah, take the 6950 2gb, ditch nvidia and use a hack for physx

Hey guys, just a quick question. I have 2 460 in SLI right now, powering my 3 monitor setup. They are great but I noticed when I launch certain games and set anti aliasing high it takes hit in FPS from 30-60 to something very low as 3-7. Anyway, a friend offered me an ATI xfx 6950 2gb with unlocked shaders to 6970 in exchange of my SLI setup but Its been ages (since 4850x2) without using ATI so I don't know where it stands. I have a dedicated physx card which I would use via Hack to get the physx enabled, but my concern is performance wise and if eyefinity will work as good as nvidia surround .

Also, I night add, that I don't have a problem to OC the cards, but I've found harder to OC in SLI than a single GPU

It'll be better in those instances where your FPS is dropping into the single digit range. It's due to a lack of memory on the video cards (768MB effectively). There's no more space so things slow to a crawl. I can't comment on how it'll perform in situations where the FPS doesn't tank due to that problem as I'm not very familiar with 460s.

Edit:
Also, I don't think AA should be all that necessary for that resolution. AA is meant to reduce jaggy lines due to a lack of resolution, which shouldn't be much of a problem in your case. Minimal AA should be required.

the 460's are hitting that Vram wall which is why the single digits, you need 2gb minimum for that resolution of 6080x1200 so the 6950 turned 6970 will be pretty good at such resolutions better then the 460 sli due to the bigger vram limit. but you will need another 6970 tho or unlocked 6950 for crossfire so you can get much playable frames

Should I expect a good performance but lower FPS or did I understand wrongly?

I see. so basically, you are saying AA= 8x is not that much of improvement but you should at least run 2X in both AA and AF?

something very low as 3-7

768MB, megabyte man, can you say vram choke? You need more vram. It's obvious which card has it...

so one 6950 2gb will be better than the SLI setup because of VRAM

the SLI 460's will have more raw power but that resolution even a 1gb version will hit that wall. the 580 SLI will have some issues at 1.5gb at such monsterous resolution.

but with AA on, another one will still be needed yet, the performance wont take such a hit like in the SLI setup?

not as much it'll be noticable depending on game and area within the game, should beable to run some aa but not alot tho 4x AA is usually all you need even 2x will do alright at such resolutions smile.gif

Should I expect a good performance but lower FPS or did I understand wrongly?

one thing i understood with radeon cards is they do really well for themselves at multiple displays, i've seen the 1gb 6870's in crossfire do a 3 1080 monitor display run and sure it bogged down alittle bit in a few parts due to hitting that 1gb vram limit but it was still playable none the less.

I see. so basically, you are saying AA= 8x is not that much of improvement but you should at least run 2X in both AA and AF?

you won't notice anything beyond 4x in terms of AA, but AF tho you can tell differences at certain distances which if you have it at x16 then you won't see textures in the distance be blurry but at 8x it'll be alittle noticable then at 4x it'll be noticable and so on.

all in all you can't really go to wrong with a 6950 converted to a 6970, those cards are still very usable cards and it's a great deal in my opinion. someone can come and correct me if im wrong in a area or two.

I can get playable FPS in most new titles with a slight sacrifice in eye candy. (Slightly lower resolution)

2xAA is all you need, stay with 16x AF.

I'd add one thing though. It doesn't matter if you could quad SLI 460s, it won't save you if you are vram choked. You will still be crawling along at "something very low as 3-7" and that is the kicker.

well that rather does go along with what i say tho about how the SLI of 460's will be more powerful yet hit that Vram wall, but yes will still be crawling.
