7950GT vs X1900XT 256mb

Thread Starter
My friend just bought a new computer, a 4600+ THIS ONE. He knows he's gotta upgrade the psu and video card, and I suggested either the 7950 GT or the X1900XT 256mb. Any good reviews out there comparing the 2 cards? Any suggestions for a new psu? I was looking at THIS one.

Try and get the extra RAM (512) if possible. I have done a little bit of testing with the 7900GT 256 and the 512 version. The 256 will clock higher on the RAM. With both cards running at the same speeds the 256 version would bench better (3d05\\06, Aquamark) but doing the FEAR tests for instance the 512 would run around 20 FPS higher. It goes to show the extra RAM is helpful of the latest demanding games.

The 7950GT comes with 512MB while the XT you posted is the 256MB model, so I'd say the 512MB model is better, remember that some games will benefit from a 512MB frame buffer.

Get the X1900XT 256mb it beats the 7950gt in most tests and in gaming measures it tended to be equal to or a couple frames slower (like 1-3) than the 512mb X1900XT, in a couple cases the 256mb version preformed a couple frames better.
