go with an APU.

Unfortunately, for WoW (MMORPG), CPU performance is much more important. APU needs to be OC'd, meaning better MB and cooler. At budget, stock settings are better, hence Pentium G620 (SB).

if you can convince him to go up to $460ish, this would be great, as it is lacking a hard drive.

and @op a i3 2100 is a great processor but u have it pros and cons buddy
Pros
  • the Hyper-transport technology make it virtually a Quad
  • and it performs even better then any Phenom II X4 series(at stock tongue.gif)
Cons
  • it can not be overclock even abit
  • the Hyper-transport link makes it a Quad but in Gaming a true quad performs better in the latest games like BF3

I see you're in Texas and it just so happens there's a Microcenter in Texas. If you're not far away from it, your budget will work (somewhat) with a 2500K and a HD6770.A little over though and without a HDD sad-smiley-002.gif.The main point is the CPU which you need in order to play those games.
CPU+Mobo combo
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0354589 = $179.99
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0375352 = $49.99 with $10 MIR
Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811233067 = $19.99+$3.99 shipping
PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171031 = $39.99 with $10 MIR
RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231308 = $39.99
GPU
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0381820 = $99.99 with $20 MIR

Total=$433.93+tax : - $40 in rebates
So in reality around $400.I would go with this and just look for a used HDD here at OCN for cheap. But i think you need to convince your friend to up the budget to $450 to get a nice used HDD.

The build is for a guy in Kentucky. I am going to be guiding him through building it over the internet (along with the help of newegg videos)

And I live in AMARILLO texas... The closest microcenter is 300 miles away.

Everyone thanks for the suggestions Im going to be looking into it seriously.

Another question is.. How much further could we get with another 100 dollars on the build. I have a Samsung Spinpoint 1 TB but I'd be wary to send anyone a 1 TB hd right now :S
