New Conroe Build

Well my conroe parts arrived today, fun fun fun.

E6400
GA-965P-S3
Corsair DDR2 667 C4

Windows didn't like the motherboard swap from an A8N-SLI so as soon as it finishes the install I'll get to play around with this bad boy. Unfortunately there is no adapter for my Koolance water block so it will be air cooled for a couple weeks until I order an Apogee. For some reason the motherboard set the FSB to 200... so it ran a little slow and kept turning off the CPU fan, a bit disconcerning. I have my sights set low with this one, if I get to 3Ghz I'll be happy, maybe higher once I get the water cooling back on it.

That's probably just the factory default setting or in the worst case you just need to update the BIOS.

Nice specs you picked out there, I had to setup and reinstall my new system over 2 days because I've been that busy at Uni. I still haven't got all my games reinstalled.

Ya it'll take me a few hours to get BF2 and FEAR put back on there. I forgot to backup my FEAR propgress so unless it is in my "my docs" folder I'll have to start over again, it's fun though.

Well I got windows up and running and have been through about three different temp monitoring programs... Easy Tune, Core Temp, Speed Fan, and Intel TAT. I think the concensus here is use the Intel TAT and keep temps under 60.... Well ideling (stock cooler) I'm hitting 47 with 4x120mm fans going in this case (2 in 2 out on top). One of those 120's is blowingcold air right at the cpu cooler. Needless to say load temps are not great, especially with the Intel TAT tool. My plans are to get my watercooling back working, waiting on the swiftech block, and if that doesn't drastically help then explore RMA'ing the chip or lapping it. Oh ya, this is with stock core voltage and a 4mhz overclock..... ya 4.

Well I got my lapping kit from easypckits.com, I was VERY impressed. I was NOT impressed with the IHS on my E6400, it was VISIBLY warped. The corners and one edge are very far from flat, even after lapping it they still show grey. I could have gone farther, but 1. it doesn't matter, the low spots don't make contact with the core, 2. I didn't know how thick the IHS was and didn't want to grind on my core. It's all shiney now and FedEx tells me that my waterblock is waiting at home. I also need to appologize to anyone reading this thread thinking I had an E6600 or higher, I thought all new C2Ds were called Conroe cores, mine is an Allendale with half the cache memory, but a fine CPU none the less and I knew that when I bought it, just not the correct terminology. Come on clock.... move faster..... I have a computer to put back together!

Well I got the apogee on, and after much trouble shooting... and one bent LGA pin... success. I was a bad boy and didn't put the plastic cover on the socket, and must have hit the socket somehow. It's fixed now and the temps are WORLDS better than before. I have 10 degrees celcius reduction under load, and 12 degrees at idle!! Lapping and good water cooling made a hell of a difference.
