Another Noob router Question

Thread Starter
Hey guys, ive been posting a lot lately getting TONS of help..Ive learned so much about overclocking hardware etc etc etc...

But i have a way different question this time..

I truly know nothing about networking...

And the wireless modem i have now is a Wireless G netgear thats like burning out...

So i bought a new one..

Unfortunatly i didnt read that theres a lot of difference between wireless n and wireless g,and i went ahead and bought a router impulsively that is WIRELESS G...

The one i currently have that is burning out is (i beleive) a NETGEAR WGR614

its ok, but the hardwired lan i have coming off off it is getting worse and worse, slower and slower... And the wireless never barely even reached my kitchen....
The one good thing is it rarely ever "dropped" the signal,it just had a real bad wireless signal when far away.

I went ahead and bought this one..... Linksys WRT54GL for 49.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190

Do you think i will have good results (longer distance-faster speeds though rated the same as other) with this new one or should i just return it for a wireless-N router?

i think for 30$ more i can get a wireless N right? Or is that something i dont need?

I want to have max speeds just for surfing, maybe some youtube, and good lan speeds coming off of it.......No hd streaming really, but maybe in the future

PS,i know this site is for overclicking, but if they are going to have all these other sections, they should have one just for networking!! this is the most helpful site of all!!!

thats a vary old router, you would have been better off getting a refurb wnr2000v2 for 25bucks or get one new. Or just getting a wnr3500L on newegg or something. These are pretty much the best routers to run dd-wrt on for a good price.

But if it works for you then keep it. If you really don't need N. Just make sure its stable and everything, maybe some heavy torrent traffic to test it out. Really its still a good router.

New router should do everything pretty well. If you have signal range issues, dd-wrt (flashed over stock firmware) allows you to increase the wireless power (DO NOT SET TOO HIGH) it could burn out the radio faster, but just a slight bump won't hurt it and will give better range.
