[TPU] Gamers and Publishers Worldwide Log On to Origin - Page 7

I wonder how this compared to Steams launch, as Valve don't release numbers we'll never know I guess.

I hope Origin goes down the drain though, I want one simple library for all my games that lets me download updates and even mods for them, even if it opens up Steam or Origin when I go to play it, Steam was as close to that as we'll likely ever get and if Origin is successful...Well, not only do we have EA's usual smile-while-shooting-the-user approach having a probably chance of appearing somewhere, there's also a decent chance of a Activision, Blizzard, Ubisoft, etc software download platform...Heck, even let Steam fall by the wayside and have a third party distribution platform with the features I mentioned instead.

If you have one to rule them all that is called a monopoly which in the US is illegal. And being that Valve is a US company, if it became the only one, they would probably be split up in to two separate companies like ATT was at one point.

Why do people want Origin to fail? If they compete that means cheaper prices. Cheaper prices are better for the consumer and forces companies to come up with ideas to get an edge (hopefully legal) on the other in terms of features.

That's like saying I only want 1 dealership chain that is allowed to sell different makes and models of cars. It doesn't make sense. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it should fail.

If it weren't for Origin, Amazon DD, and others, Valve would have the ability to charge 50 dollars or more for all games and never put them on sale. But because they have to fight for your dollar, it forces them to do those crazy sales they have,

Amazon just downloads the retail CD folder afaik using a downloader program similar to MSDN/Technet. There is no digital manager program like EA Download Manager/Origin. Your game key information is in an HTML file within the folder. Also your game purchase information and key is under the software section account of the Amazon website.

However, if your game requires Origin/Steam to play, you might as well input the key into Origin/Steam.

If origin becomes popular enough someone will probably develop a system that unifies the origin and steam chats and libraries.
Personally I think they need to improve the way origin feels when you're using it but it's fine other than that.
Just things like someone's origin profile not linking to their BF3 stats, chat could be simpler, BF3 beta is in my library and I own BF3 already so it's useless.
They're all simple things they seem to have overlooked but attention to detail will come in time, they probably wanted a working service up first.

The argument I don't get the most is "I don't want to use Origin cause it has to be running in the background". If that is your argument then you shouldn't be running Steam either.
Unless you are the 3.07% according to the Steam servery who is running 1GB of RAM or less Origin nor Steam will affect your computer's performance. Also if you are in that 2 GB area chances are you aren't playing a demanding game to begin with since pretty much a lot new games recommend at least 2GB.
Hell if anything according to my task manager Origin uses less resources than Steam and Origin is doing a download right now.

well i have 292 games in steam on my main pc and it uses 243MB........the backup pc with only 8 games installed uses 70MB.......what's your point?

I highly doubt Origin being Steam's main competitor will lower prices. EA will pretty much just have future EA titles as Origin Exclusives to increase it's install base, as would Steam. They will only push consumers to use their platform by such means, and they will still make money.

whats funny ..yes I HATE EA

Remedy Entertainment Ltd. is proud to announce that Alan Wake will finally be available on PCs through Steam on February 16
before Origin by 2 weeks about the same time the boxed version is released and the Trion studios next 2 games are F2P and rift is failing fast I look for it to go F2P just any-day, they have merged servers twice due to low population and can be bought at wallyworld for less then $10.00 and no need for 3rd party software such as Origin, IMO the only thing making Origin gain popularity is SWTOR if it wasn't for that it would of been canned already.

  1. Steam HAS PLENTY of competition already. Brick & Mortar. Gamefly, Gamestop, BestBuy, Target, Fry's, Newegg, Amazon, GOG.com, D2D.com and every electronics store or website you can think of
  2. Steam operates in a business field that
    1. has no patents with which to limit competition ( throw out your comparisons to Apple, Intel, Big pharma, etc )
    2. has no natural or mandated advantages against competition ( throw out your comparisons to AT&T, Big oil, Cable, etc )
    3. has relatively ZERO startup costs
    4. Is incredibly cheap to maintain
    5. produces incredible amounts of change if businesses don't keep up ( Myspace anyone? )

You sir are an idiot. Can't really say that in a nicer way. Let's see.... 14 years and we have: Half-Life + 3 expansions, Half-Life 2 plus 2 "half" expansions". Yeah they sure milked that. Man we spent a fortune on the millions of DLC we had to buy to enjoy it. Oh yeah man my wallet hurts!

Valve has been pleaded with by several of the highest paying studios in hollywood for a movie. They also have MASSIVE amounts of requests to actually MAKE ANOTHER Half-life game. Yeah that's what I'd call milking.
