Oh,
if it wasn't for the subscription update e-mail, I wouldn't have remembered about this thread - sorry.

In cases where the pump is running above it's spec speed (2100 RPM), which usually happens on a PSU that gives 12,3V, one 1N400x diode might not be enough, as you have seen for yourself. You can safely try two such diodes in series, which will result in pump RPM around 1800, which is safe for the unit and should stop the noise.

Extra care should be take if you want to use a 3-pin adapter to connect the unit to a motherboard fan header, as there was a user who killed his unit this way - you have to double check and re-check that the pump's speed isn't being variated (for example, according to a CPU temp) because he had his unit dynamically adjusted and it killed it.
