Budget 24/7 help

Thread Starter
I have a few left over components from my old comp, and want to build an initial low cost 24/7 rig. I also want it to run as quiet as possible since its in my room. I will be upgrading it over time.

What I have now:
Mobo: ASUS M3N78-vm
CPU: AMD X2 250 3.0GHz
Ram: 3GB ddr2 400
PSU: 430watt coolmax

Budget=$120:
$10-15 2nd hand tiny hdd
$60-$70 gts 450 or GTX 460
$30-40 Case

Any ideas on what case I should be looking at in this price range, either second hand or new? Eventually I'll upgrade the mother board so I can add more cards and a better psu, so i want the case to have the capacity to quietly cool it all. Here's what I plan on this thing being in 6-12 months

Stage2:
msi K9A2 Platnium mobo -$50
AMD x2 250 - $0
3GB ddr2 - $0
4 x GTX 460 w/ semi-passive cooling - $240-$280
HDD for windows and F@H - $10-$15
A BIG PSU for it all - $150
Case: $30-40

Total: $380 - $450

I really like the antec 300 in that price range, i've seen some hate for the case around here not sure why. Im running the same cpu on a ddr3 asus board in this case and have no prob running it 24\7

I would guess you would need at least a 1000w power supply for that but more likely 1200. You will likely not find any 1200w power supply of decent quality for $150 but I might be wrong.

You might be better off with a 1035T(I love mine, but it is not overclocked, I have seen one guy on this site push theirs to 3.6) or a 1055T (95W) if you can get your hands on one (if push hard enuf, they perform as well as a 1090T), I belive there is a 1055T in the for sale threads, but it is a pacakge deal when I scaned through, PM the person and see if they will split it apart. Since this is going to be in your room, you might run into capacator wine on the graffic cards, while this dosn't hurt the cards, the ringing gets olds really quick, same with the power bill.

yea, I pulled the number out of my butt. I figure I could find a good 1200 watt for 200 used or on sale if I lurk long enough.

Is the route i'm taking the most effective ppd/$

The 460s are decent as far as pp$ and ppw. But the new line of Nvidia chips might be dropping semi soon. Might be worth it to wait for that as GPU prices will go down before that. Just make sure you get as efficient a PSU as you can. Might save money in the short term but the energy cost will bite you in the long run if you pay for it

^ The guy above has some good advice, you owe him a rep tongue.gif

Dude, since its gonna be a budget 24/7 build and since it'll stay in your room, get a cheaper passive card like the 4670, 5670 or a 6670 or something like a passive GTS450 if they even make those. GTX460's can now be had for around $100. I would spend the extra cash on getting a SDD or a Single Platter Drive 160GB or less from Samsung or something. Trust me, I have a similar setup in my room and the loudest part is the damn HDD. Good Luck thumb.gif

Do you know that this is a folding machine?

Ya the SSDs wont really help folding wise but are not a bad option given their low power draw and the cost of HDDs right now. ATI cards unfortunately suck at folding so they are not a great option. From the look of neweggs site they have been phasing the 460s out for a little while so you might be able to get a good deal on those if you keep checking.

I think if you cram 4, 460s into one case/motherboard and have them all folding they're going to get damn hot.

You're looking at what 10k~12k per 460? Considering the power pull and the massive amounts of heat, not sure if it'll be worth it in the end. 2cents.gif
