tv tuner/dvr and slingbox alternative?

Hey guys, so recently my GF moved out because of work, her and her roommate get basic cable for free along with their rent, so we had 2 questions since im not to experienced with this stuff.

- What would be the best option to record tv while shes at work? i was thinking maybe a tv tuner on her desktop but not sure which ones are good and what program to use to record. confused.gif The only downside i can think though is that the energy that the computer would use since it would have to be on to record, would there be a way around that.

- Are there any slingbox alternatives with a built in tuner? I was looking at the slingbox pro-HD but seems that the product quality is not so good. We wanted to use it so i would be able to watch from my apartment as well as we can watch it occasionally on our mobile devices.

Her cable type is the one that plugs right into the tv and does not require a set top box

Thanks for the help! biggrin.gif

do you know if you have digital cable or analog cable? either way, if you don't want to pay, and you want the channels you get for plugging into just a tv, I'd recommend a Hauppauge HVR-2250. Just got one from a friend and it gets my lower channels just dandy. I also have a Hauppauge WinTVR 2650 box that uses a cable card. Comcast charges me nothing per month for the card and I get channels 101-919, as high as Comcast offers. Some companies charge for a cablecard, but it's usually no more than $5 per month. Using Windows 7 and Windows Media Center, I schedule recordings and watch recorded content very easily. With the 2250 that I recommended, it is a dual tuner so you can watch and record or record two shows at once, or watch on the computer and on the Xbox 360 (when it is setup as an extender.)

As for the slingbox alternative, I really don't know. Sorry I can't help you there!

just an edit: I could get the channels 1-100 with my 2650 but in my area they are still analog, and the 2650 is a digital tuner only. A good way to tell is if you need an adapter for an older TV to receive cable, or the TV that the cable goes into needs to "scan" for channels. The 2250 I recommended is both digital and analog, so you're all set, just asking because if you are digital, I would strongly recommend the 2650. I still do recommend it, but if you can't get channels 1-100, usually you would watch the majority of those.

ah interesting! so with the card your able to record shows via windows media center? didnt know it can record (well actually never used it before >_>) biggrin.gif guess you learn something new everyday, can you watch tv via wmc too? just curious

But to my knowledge she told me its all digital when i was there last week, but i know she has channels ranging from 1-100 as well as a few above 100 (i think 100-150?) hmm from the looks of it the 2650 is an external while the 2250 is an internal card, probably go with the internal since she has a slot open, but aside from the internal external factor the two are the same im guessing

haha sir. the difference between the two is the 2650 accepts a cable card. this is a small card that inserts and you activate it with the cable company. it unlocks channels you usually need a cable box for. the 2250 just gets what a tv can get, digital or analog. the 2650 will only get digital channels, but it can UN-encrypt them like a cable box.

you can record and watch live with WMC, it's very simple and streamlined. I watch tv on my machine whenever it's on, and to fall asleep. any other questions, i'd be happy to answer them as I have both cards running in my system right now smile.gif

hmmm ill def have to look into this, did look at some reviews for both and they both seem good biggrin.gif prob ask her about the cable card see if they have one or need one and what not.

hmm not sure if you have an xbox, but ill ask anyways incase you might know. with the xbox 360 can you set up recordings or what not? or just view tv when the computers on? maybe i can set up a AMD fusion/ intel atom pc with a tv tuner and stream it to an xbox (i got like ... 11 of them laying around @_@ ) so she dont have to leave her computer on... i wonder if theres a way to stream video remotely though windows 7 .. maybe that could be a sling box alternative tongue.gif

You can setup recordings with an xbox and stream tv to the xbox. the beauty of a dual tuner or a quad tuner (much more expensive) is that you can have multiple tv signals recording or streaming at once. you might want to check this in regards to live streaming locally or across the net. i definitely recommend an HTPC, or just run the card on your rig and keep it on 24/7. my rig is always on anyways, and I have it setup to record to my green drive by default so it's nice and quiet.

with the cablecard, almost every company has one. if they don't know what your talking about, just say you have a tivo and need the card for it to work like a cable box biggrin.gif

Do you know if it is a cable service or TV antenna? From what you are describing it sounds like it is a cable service. Any cable box involved?

For TV tuner, there is no way around the fact that PC has to be on for recording. I suppose you can build an AMD Zacate or Intel Atom low power PC and hook that up with TV tuner to record show.

"Her cable type is the one that plugs right into the tv and does not require a set top box"
from OP, it is a cable service but it doesn't need any decryption, so he will be able to use the tuner with the cable PnP style, unless he gets a cablecard biggrin.gif

KK. Thanks for pointing that out.

My suggestion would be to go for HVR-2250, or 2 x HVR-1250. 2 x HVR-1250 will actually be cheaper than HVR-2250 if you buy them used. If power consumption is an issue than low power PC like AMD Zacate or Intel Atom will do.

As for recording, I personally just use Windows Media Center to record the show.

yup its cable biggrin.gif but she only has one pci-e slot in her computer (or i could use my back up 1155 board ..hmmm) but got any ideas for something like slingbox? oh! do they have remote viewing software that i can use to watch from 300 miles away? if i have a small low power rig on all the time if theres some sort of software i can use to get access to to tv tuner biggrin.gif

(her rig is flowery pink in my sig but it needs to be updated >_<)

as for a possible htpc, i have a back up 1155 board, maybe i can just get a cheap case and put in a Pentium g620 in that? i dont think it would use to much more power then a atom or amd on idle..maybe im wrong confused.gif
