Setting up a new speaker setup - Page 2

Black Venom- I wish i had a crawl space or something but I don't its all hardwood floor and I don't want to just lay out cable across the room. And to answer your other question, the rear speaker would be maybe 5 feet away. That probably sounds like a lot.

GanjaSMK- I scoped out a Pioneer 5.1 channel which would be doable and I would have to get another speaker and a subwoofer.

you could always get a lot of speaker wire and just hide it behind the floorboard. they make flat wires and really thin wires (small speakers), really shouldnt be to hard to hide some wires.

@R4MP4G3

You'll definitely get better sound from speakers (built for home audio or otherwise, like studio monitors) than you would from the Z506, with a receiver (be it your Sony or the Pioneer you looked at).

If you decide on a new receiver you'll end up using a digital link (most likely, it's the easiest). In that case, get a good receiver with a good DAC (sorry, I have no recommendations redface.gif).

As for running wires, here are two solutions for you - wireless (not great but work fine depending on other equipment {phones/wifi} in the same space) or you can run wire in hidden cable closures like you would with room trimming (but use it on the floor so it's much less noticeable and doesn't detract from whatever your walls look like now).

let it be know you can't really use optical out for use with 5.1 at least for games....just doesn't work really, yeah there are some dolby digital live and stuff but it is gimmicky and hard to setup.

believe me I tried but just wound up using analog outputs

Can you still use a custom 5.1 setup with a receiver and hook it up to analog outputs?

Yes but the receiver has to have multi channel inputs. Also if it has optical and if your sound card supports live encoding of DD 5.1 then yes as well.

Also about the 5.1 audio for gaming:

The ASUS Xonar DX (and D1 as far as I know) includes DD Live! licensing, giving you 5.1 in any games that use it (over digital out), like BFBC2, etc.

The ASUS Xonar DG does not have DD Live! licensing, only DD and DTS which will still support 5.1 audio if the game stream can be converted to PCM 5.1 audio - if I remember correctly BF3 uses DD instead of DD Live!.

5.1 audio is dependent upon the source, not the out put of card/receiver. As long as the source is capable of 5.1, you should be able to get it if your output components can do 5.1.

That's the thing though. I don't want to get another sound card. I'll have to play around with it and see if I can get it to work. Thanks for all the help guys!thumb.gif

Heh, redface.gif

I didn't mean to convey that you should get another card or anything - I was simply trying to point out that some cards are capable of different formats (DD Live! versus DTS) and so if you had content that did 5.1 via DD Live!, if the hardware you're using isn't licensed for it you won't be able to decode it to an analog signal, thus rendering you to stereo or Pro Logic.

So with that in mind - I would find out what kind of Dolby modes your card can handle, (DTS, DD, DD Live!, etc) and find a compatible receiver than can do all of those or at least the DTS/DD for any game titles you might have that use PCM/DD/DTS streams.

R4MP4G3, I have the same situation, and am building a computer sound system. I am planning on hooking up my some new reciever (havn't decided yet, to Energy Classic 5.1 speakers on sale at Newegg, and a BIC America F12 subwoofer. As far as I understand, your graphics card is capable of outputing Dolby/DTS so long as your reciever is capable of processing. I'll let you know how it goes.
