replacement for 4870x2

Thread Starter
So i have a Diamond 4870x2 and i tried to take everything apart to clean it and realized that the previous owner most likely glued the cooler back on or something, took all the screws out but the thing wont budge mad.gif

so unless i find a solution to get it apart to re-apply the TIM and clear the dust, i need to start looking for a replacement card. Although ive wanted one anyways hehe biggrin.gif

so whats the best bang for buck, single gpu card that can match or exceed the 4870x2 that you guys would reccomend? Feel free to give me plenty of options in different price ranges, i like to have a selection of good options

and if anyone has an idea on how to get the cooler off, id be super happy biggrin.gif

btw if its a good bitcoin miner id consider it a definite plus biggrin.gif

and dont worry, i have my nvidia rig doing folding@home lol, im not selfish

Have you tried gently twisting it as in opening a jar?

i could give that a shot...i was mostly trying to pull straight up so that might be the ticket. If i manage to get it apart then i plan on cleaning it out and modding the cooler for better airflow perhaps as seen here: http://www.octeamdenmark.com/forums/extreme-mods/2774-ati-4870x2-full-vmod-cooler-guide.html

still, hit me with recommended cards because as much as i like my 4870x2, some of my favorite games (Test drive unlimited 2) have horrible crossfire implementation

Umm, not too sure with the newer cards but maybe a 5870? Someone else tag in!

If I remember correctly 4870x2 ~ 5870.

So, 7850 (they are out soon) and above (already out) would be an upgrade...
well the first question is, what's your budget?

I'd recommend a 7970 or a 7950 all day long because they are new and powerful cards

But if you don't want to spend 500-600 on a new card then thats where things get tricky because theres something at every price point and the 78xx's are coming out in March

grrr that cooler is on pretty tight!!!! its making me mad

well im good with either the 6 or 7 series but my budget is kinda unknown. Anywhere between 150-250 is my goal

EDIT: i suppose its fine for right now, its idling at 39-41c at 50% fan speed, full load is around 60-65 at 100% speed i think so i wont worry too much for the time being.

instead, i will start getting money together for a new card. I want to wait for the 7870, but hopping on a 6950 or 6870 when the price drops is pretty tempting

your gonna break a perfectly good 4870x2. i run my 4850 at 83 percent fan speed with clean heat sink and fresh as5 and get 45c idle

6950 will be a hair faster(avg) but smoother(higher min)

I went from one to the other.
