2500K Can't Get To 4.5ghz Help!

Thread Starter
I'm having trouble overclocking this 2500k to 4.5ghz. I disabled all the power saving features and speedstep in bios. Tried with voltage at 1.5v but it still would not post. Currently at 4.4ghz no problems but every time I set multi to 45, it won't post. I flashed the mobo to the latest bios, still no dice. Am I doing something wrong? I suspected the mobo from the start because it was acting weird even at stock. I got the 2500k from a guy who said he had it at 4.6ghz. I realize there is no guarantee on overclocking but it should at least hit 4.5ghz. Here are my specs:

Cpu: i5 2500k. Costa Rica. Batch # 314B217
Mobo: Asrock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
Ram: G.Skill DDR3 1600mhz
Gpu: 6950 2gb
Psu: Thermaltake Toughpower 1000 watt
Cooler: Scythe Mugen 2

you answered your question; there are no guarentees. lately i've seen quite a few of these threads talking about not being able to reach 4.2-4.6 :/ I'm going to be very thankful that I have mine.

I mean, if you can get another mobo you could try it, but I doubt that's the issue.

edit: check this link out.

If you have a buddy that has a motherboard you can use, try it. However, if you don't, I wouldn't buy a new motherboard without 100% certainty that it was the culprit and not the CPU.

How are the pins on the mobo supposed to look? I can't remember what the pins looked like on my LGA1366 mobo but the pins on this mobo all looked slanted (uniformly, not scattered) when I took a close up look.

if the chip works then i can guarantee it's not the pins. if they were bent enough to impact anything the chip wouldn't work in that board and would probably burn out. in 1155 the motherboard's pins should be straight up.

Hmmmm this is strange. None of the pins on this board are straight up. Guess I'll order another board and compare.

dude if the pins weren't right the cpu wouldn't work, simple.

I wouldnt miss any sleep because of 100mhz, to tell you the truth.
4.4ghz is plenty... keep trying but be glad you have an awesome gaming cpu.

When 4.4 becames obsolete, jump to next gen.

I have the same mobo as you, currently running my i5 2500k @ 4.8. I could post my bios specs if you'd like, maybe try to copy them and see if you get similar results?
