2TB boot drive limitation

Thread Starter
I'm thinking of upgrading my 4x250gb drives to 4x1 or 2TB drives. what I'm curious about though is I undrestand that there is a 2tb limitation as a boot drive. What I'm curious about though is would that apply to the physical single drive itself under windows vista x64 or would the whole raid array if it is over 2 tb?

if it is based upon the raid array total I'm kinda screwed on that one but if it is based upon only the single drive itsef then I might be ok :-)

A raid array would work. I'm pretty sure you could even partition the 4tb drive into a Boot and Data scheme and that would work, too - but I'm not positive. It has to do with the limitations of Long LBA which is used for >2tb drives.

Yes there is a boot limitation with disks that are MBR formatted, but not GPT formatted.

If you have a uefi motherboard in my install guide I have steps on how to set up a GPT formatted OS boot drive or array in this case to overcome the 2.2TB partition limit. My guide is made for Windows 7, but you can follow the install procedure for Vista 64bit as well and it should work.

Also you need to have a motherboard with UEFI. The problem is that the BIOS is 32 bit and doesn't understand more than 2TB even with a GPT boot record.
