Yeah I saw those videos. Cool.
Their PWM signal uses normal polarity I hope?

Not quite sure what you mean about polarity? I know there are some Nidec fans that work on a reversed frequency (as in 100% duty cycle = stop and 0% duty cycle = full speed ahead). If that's what you're asking; then yes; these fans use normal PWM polarity (as in 0% duty cycle = 10% speed and 100% duty cycle = 100% speed). They are designed to not stop at 0% duty cycle.

395

Having said that; they do NOT work like normal PWM fans. I'll explain:

- Normal PWM fans and consumer grade motherboards are all made to work within a 16KHz to 25KHz range; that way they can talk to each other and the motherboard can control the PWM fans via BIOS through the CPU_FAN header and others.

- These Nidecs are not "consumer grade" fans. From what I know; they are used, mostly, on mainframes. These fans work on a frequency range from 500Hz to 5Khz. So your consumer motherboard will NOT be able to talk to them and control their speed. If you want to regulate their speed via PWM you will have to make your own PWM controller like I did.

237

Take the image above. Your period length goes from 200µs up to 2ms. The PWM Frequency is found by the formula F = 1 / T where "T" is your period length in seconds.

So we convert both numbers to seconds:
200µs = 0.0002s
2ms = 0.002s

And now we can figure out the PWM Frequency range:

1 / 0.002s = 500Hz
1/0.0002s = 5000Hz or 5KHz.

Meh, that sucks. I have built more stuff than I care to remember (with 555/556 too) but that was over 30 years ago and I went 100% digital and software since then smile.gif
I could probably still find my 555 cookbook if I dig long enough.
So the first order of business will be to buy a 9V battery and fire up the old DMM.

The controller is super simple. I mean; so simple that I could make it. biggrin.gif Just a 556, some caps, a pot, a few resistors and done.

Or you could simply bypass the "special" Nidecs and go for some of these:

1. They're only about $40 each vs $100 each for the Nidecs.
2. They're almost as powerful as the Nidecs. Same CFM, just not as much static pressure, but still more static pressure than most "regular" fans.
3. They work in the 16Khz to 25Khz range for PWM frequency so any consumer grade motherboard will be able to control them.

I run one of them on my daily driver, paired with a Venomous X Black. The fan runs 24/7 at about 1500 RPM and at that speed the other fans in the case (stock Coolermaster fans that came with the CM690II Advanced) make more noise than it.

Warning: Just don't feed them power from the motherboard header. That is unless you want to make blue smoke inside your case. biggrin.gif
