Did i killl my motherboard?

Thread Starter
Im gonna keep this short. I was on my computer it froze so I shut it off because it locked itself to my desktop. I tried to start it up again & it wouldn't post. I looked at my mobo & it had the dram led on so I cleared my cmos & loosened my timings. Everything booted fine until 5 minutes later when it restarted itself. The same issue happened.

I cleared my cmos & it won't post anymore. I tried other ram that I have & still stuck at a black screen without a post. The dram led is still red & it doesn't matter how many times or how I clear my cmos. It won't go away.

Would appreciate some helpful input, thanks smile.gif

You might try unplugging it or shutting down the PSU, then hold down the power button for a few seconds. I've found this can work on some motherboard that won't post.

If that doesnt work, take out your RAM and put in one stick at a time to test each stick. Or try swapping the RAM from a known good machine.

i've tried all of this, but I figured out my issue. & yes I have a fail mobo I believe. Everytime I put ram in my left 2 slots it won't post, but if I put them in my right slots it posts just fine. Anybody know whats causing this or is it time to RMA?

Thanks!

if the ram works in other slots on mb then ram is good...and unless your bios has adjustments that apply to slots separately then that set of slots has failed...may not be completely dead but not right..

Most mobos will only POST with RAM in a specific set of slots. On your MOBO, It's probably the left two. Look up you manual and read the section on DIMM population. That doesn't sound like a bad mobo to me.

he had been running system with ram in slots and it gradually failed on him...in his first post he wrote a description of failure...

mb's will post with ram in any slots in general...even the wrong ones or only one stick instead of 2 and being in wrong slots for dual channel and so forth?

there is usually a set that is recommended as being best if all are not being populated and may actually effect performance but it should post in any configuration..right or wrong

It really just depends on the mobo and chipset. Some older motherboards were fine populated any way. But X58 mobos like mine will not boot with incorrectly populated DIMM slots.

My motherboard will POST in this configuration.
700

Will NOT POST like this:
700
