Sufficient PSU for FX-4100 overclock on air?

Thread Starter
I'd like to overlock the FX-4100 on air using a Hyper 212+. The PSU I have in mind is the Seasonic S12II 620W. From what I've seen, the chip can reach mid-4's on air - what I'm wondering is whether that PSU will limit my overclock to less than mid-4's. For reference, I'll also be running an HD 6870.

* No comments that include the 960T - please and thanks thumb.gif

laugher.gif I know one guy in particular around here that just loves the 960T.Anyway i don't think it should be a problem with that PSU.

You've got enough room to overclock the FX-4100 and run TWO HD 6870s safely.

Have a look at the 12V rail voltages.  The 95W TDP FX-4100 typically consumes less power than Phenom II x4 processors even when overclocked to higher speeds (compared to the OCed Ph II x4) - 150W or so when OCed and that may be an overstatement.  The 6870 has a 150W TDP (more a value of heat output but also an approx power consumption value).  The S12 II 620 has a 570W 12V rail capacity (the 12V rail is responsible for the power supply to the major system components such as the CPU and GPU(s).  You could run a 4100 with two 6870s on this PSU while maintaining excellent power delivery efficiency levels (a PSU is most efficient at between 50-80% load or so) - i.e. less power from the wall goes to waste during any AC -> DC conversions.

Just saw this - thanks for the breakdown! It's good to know how it works out.
