Inconsistent GPU usage Battlefield 3 580 SLI...

Hey guys. For whatever reason I have been having this problem with GPU usage being in the upper 80s and even in the high 70s when playing BF3. You can see in the pic above that it goes up and down. It will usually go to 95-97% and fluctuate back to the 80s. I have the 290.53 drivers, I'm running at 1080p, I have max performance power usage to on in the control panel, vsync off, triple buffering off.

This sucks as I feel like I'm not getting the proper usage from my cards. Any ideas ?

Just turned off hyper threading and tried again and GPU usage is still primarily in the high 80s. Playing Caspian 64 players and it was sitting at 85% and 86% respectively on my 580s resulting in a FPS of 69. This is unacceptable to me and makes me feel like I am seriously underachieving with my hardware which should not be the case at all...

EDIT: Went back to the last WHQL driver set as well...same issue. Meh

Try and remove the OC and see how it behaves. I have seen same behavior at times but normally it's 'normal' straight line.

Vsync is off, and even at normal clocks (832mhz) the cards still show this behavior even when i went back to the last official whql drivers.
Basically, this happens with like 99% of online games (and about 50% of regular games), and trust me, it's nothing to stress on or worry about. It's particularly likely when you have a really powerful multi-GPU solution, for a variety of reasons.

All you can really do is just OC your proc as far as possible, keep your drivers and games updated, and try upping your gfx settings to get more usage, and let it go at that.

Important thing to remember ... GPU usage % is only measured at one part of your GPU, its not a measure of the whole card. So often what this 'means' is that there's a bottleneck within some DIFFERENT subsystem of your card, aside from the point at which the measurement is taken. Like, say ... your memory bus is getting saturated ... or you're running out of vram ... just as random examples, not making any diagnosis on your particular issue.

OR ... there's a bottleneck elsewhere in your system as a whole ... like the CPU or the platform.

OR it's just a driver bug, in which case it might get fixed with a driver or game patch/update.

OR it's the fact that you're playing over 'the internet' ... and your cards are 'waiting' for data sometimes.

Seriously ... you'll drive yourself batty trying to 'solve' this yourself. I've tried SO MANY times ... and I'm pretty handy when it comes to this stuff. You'll waste your LIFE on this 'problem' if you let it get to you. So don't ... 80% on both cards is pretty good in an online game TBH wink.gif

I just took a look at mine and it looks pretty much like yours. Maybe I thought of another game where the line was straighter but on BF3 the AB looks similar. Same drivers, CPU @ 4.8Ghz and cards only @ 832/2100.

I kind of needed to read something like this lol.

I think it's because of the GPUs I have...there's no reason my cards why they should be dipping into the 80s and even high 70 percentage for usage. It's still over 60 so I guess that's good, but I use a 120hz monitor. I wouldn't be able to achieve 120fps with my setup in BF3 (ultra everything), but obviously the higher the better. The constant fluctuation in usage cause stuttering too.

Maybe I'll just start gaming with AB off:rolleyes:

But thanks for laying this out like you did!

Ah ... you may *think* there's 'no reason' ... but actually (clearly) there is wink.gif

The recent Skryim experience provides a great illustration of this. It's not even online, but it had a similar problem to what you describe in pretty much every town in the game ... low fps, and low GPU usage. Annoying as hell. Although I quickly determined that it was due to a CPU BN in these areas, it took some pro modders to write better cpu optimizations, which are now part of the 1.4 version of the game, and the problem is pretty much now solved in this latest release. But as you can see on that thread, a bunch of us OCN hacks worked together for weeks trying to figure out if there's anything WE could do to solve it ... and failed.

So what I'm saying is that aside from the steps I outlined above ... you are very unlikely to be able to 'fix it' yourself. So don't trip, or you'll waste your life wink.gif

Ultimately, I'm fairly certain that what you're seeing there comes down to a CPU bottleneck of one type or another, and/or it's related to the fact that you're playing online.
