DDR2 Buying Help - Page 2

Money isn't a problem, I should be able to get a fair price for my current mobo, ram, processor etc which will give me a cash boost when I change to a DDR2 setup.

This is the ram I had in mind.......Dominator 8888 DDR2......

Take advantage of the 590 chipset with its EPP feature. Only of a few sticks of ram have that feature. This is the lowest latency EPP ram I know of, but it's out of stock on Newegg. Maybe someone else has it in stock:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145035

The Dominator is also on that list, but you know how scarce it is. This Patriot ram supposedly fits the bill, but I don't know anything about it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220161

There's some OCZ EPP edition ram available now as well:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227128

Corsair was the first to have EPP. Other companies incorporating it is very new, just in case that fact influences you at all.

Its $610 here in the states...

I know money isn't a problem, but why not get just "normal" DDR2-1066, and spend the rest on a nice case and some cooling....or some games...or a 1680x1050 monitor....or 3.

Just my two cents.

I have a great case & cooling.......need a monitor mind you but all I want is a kick ass DDR 2 setup. I'm gonna have to save for a while but that Dominator looks the shiz and probably goes like the shiz.

If you guys had the choice what cpu would you go for.....FX 62 or some equivalent Core Duo (Looking for overclockability here)

I don't think you need to shell out 500+ bills for some of that brand new corsair dominator stuff. You can find some for the corsair 6400c3 for around 450$ but I don't think thats really necesary either. I would personally go for the quality Corsair, OCZ, or Geil CAS4 Stuff. They all overclock well from what I have read and the performance difference between cas 3 and cas4 is not very much, while the price difference is huge. And I don't think those cas3 modules overclock very far beyond 800Mhz at CAS3, so youll end up using some sort of cas4 timings to OC it anyway. Here's what I could do with my Corsair 6400C4 PRO.
Got it from here for 289$ about 2 months ago.....DDR2 prices have been going up like crazy tho. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145038

At stock it was doing about 7700mb/s and the latency was around 85ns, oc'ing and trimming timings made a huge difference!

Based on what I've seen and, more to the point, what the real gurus on this site have said, Core 2 seems like the way to go. I'd take your build to the General AMD section or Build Logs, where those guys are more likely to notice it. Ask your question there, and you'll get really great, knowledgeable responses from very helpful people who aren't necessarily blinded by fanboi logic. It seems like the people investing in primo AMD rigs in favor of superior Core 2 rigs are hedging their bets based on forthcoming technology, or they're just more comfortable working with AMD. Many people are also quick to point out that Core 2 is only much better for gaming at lower resolutions, because more demanding graphics settings depend more on the gpu than the cpu. But if you want a rig to tear up the benchmarks, race through multitasking, and handle Photoshop or video editing better, then Core 2 is simply superior. For gaming, it seems like either way you'll get a great system. It just depends on your uses, what you personally value, your upgrade path, and how you see upcoming tech (e.g., quad cores) panning out.
