Watercooled PS3 YLOD - Page 5

So how do you 'fix' the cooling?

I have one i repaired about 2 months ago and its still working fine but fan ramps up a fair bit after around half an hour, not too loud but almost on par with my pc!

Also my fan doesnt ramp back down it just stays at the same level until you shut it down. Don't know if thats normal or not.

I found the heatsink doesnt make very good contact with the RSX / CPU and it needed a bit more thermal paste and clamp bending to make it sit flush. Im thinking of taking it apart again, adding IC Diamond TIM, Copper Shims and new clamps and maybe an extra fan on the back but i dont want to spend much on it incase the YLOD reappears which i expect it will!

The design is rubbish, the heatsink and fan sit right at the bottom of the consol with no holes for airflow on the base and no fans drawing cold air in. The model i have is a 60GB launch day model also bought it 2006. It only YLOD 2 months ago, i used a heatgun, liquid flux and AS5 and has been working ever since smile.gif

Its such a bummer yours has YLOD after watercooling it....something must be wrong....are you sure water was actually being pumped around the system correctly?

I've come to the conclusion that the cheap paste that was on the CPU and RSX has gotten underneath them, probably my bad when I went to clean them but there was alot, and it was all around the edges so was a bugger to clean. It's not overheating, the system is bled properly and the flow is perfect (you can see it in one of the water blocks)

I use arctic cooling mx5 paste in all my builds because you can put it anywhere and it won't short anything out smile.gif

Go to the hardware store and do 45 second on one side at like 300F and then 45 on the other where the chips are with the gun about 3 inches from the chip.
Swith to 600F and do 30 seconds back and front where the chips are with the gun about 7 inches from the chip.
if you watercool it, and properly seat the heatsink, it will likely never get hot enough to ylod again, assuming you did a bad seat the first time.

I wouldnt say that the 360's reflows don't work that well. I have a falcon 360 that I got for free that was RROD. I baked it at 400f with no clean soder flux and did a case mod. Added a 90mm fan to the top to blow cool air onto the gpu heat pipe array and the cpu intake. Its been a year and a half and it still works fine. Though I had to do some pretty extensive mods to it. Though Xenon based xbox's are doomed, unless your running on water, the heatsinks just cant keep up with the heat output of those chips.

Even with new thermal paste on the 60gb they still get pretty hot. Sure with proper care they would last forever, but most people just let their system clog up with dust. All the 65nm ps3 and smaller run pretty cool though. My brother has the 80gb non BC with the 65nm cpu and gpu and the thing runs cool and quiet, about as quiet as my jasper xbox while not using the disc drive lol but most of my games are on its HD biggrin.gif

hmm strange then! Surely the cheap paste sony uses wouldnt short out the chip either?

Mine was all dried out and flaky...all i did was wipe it all clean using Articlean solution and applied a thin layer of AS5 over the RSX and CPU then a small bit on the centre to make contact with the heatsink because when spread out it wont clamp tigh enough to touch it...annoying!

I really want to mod mine with 2 PC CPU Coolers such as the Artic Cooling Freezer but it would require a lot of modding and £ so not really worth it. Id rather just make free / low cost mods to aid the airflow. I have a spare 120mm fan, 200mm fan so maybe i could add one on the back to give the heatsink a cold air feed but i dont know if its really worth while.

improve performance? is there a BIOS in the ps3 that you can OC the cpu/gpu?

Nope, that would defeat the point on getting a console.
