Now I see why so many people were complaining about that laugher.gif I thought it was only the slim that didn't have that feature. I only have a slim.

Nah it's all of them! The navy or one of the forces bought 200 of them to use as a server farm and they have them all on the initial firmware running Linux smile.gif

I decided to rip my PS3 apart today and mod it a little. I cut out a large hole over the orignal PS3 heatsink fan and then took a corsair 120mm fan, modded that to run off USB and fitted it to the PS3. Here is the result. I just played 30mins of Wipeout HD and the fan is still whisper quiet smile.gif I'd say this is a GREAT cheap mod to do if you keep your PS3 vertically!! I would have prefered to run the fan off the 12v rail inside the PS3 but i dont know how yet.I was also going to run the wires inside the case but i didnt borther in the end as i would need to drill more holes and my drill ran out of juice. When i get time ill take the case into work and get them to cut the hole more neatly and maybe drill some extra air vent holes. Also might get a front intake USB fan as i can pick one up in my local store for about £15. Worth a shot.

It runs slow via USB but still does the job and i love how silent it is now smile.gif It acts as a great cold air intake directly above the RSX / CPU...EXACTLY where you need it wink.gif

There is a thread in this section where people posted pics of them doing this. One guys had it reflowed and put in a fan just like you did but it still YLOD on him again.

I also keep reading about replacement PSUs that do not give off that much heat.

Thing is, in the long run it becomes as expensive as just buying a new SLIM. I already have a new slim. I would like to get the old one running for laughs. And even with WC and an added fan it would look crazy, but also be crazy cool hahaha.

I have seen those aftermarket clamps for the heatsink of the PS3 btw. But again; more money.

Keep us posted topic starter!!!

I am aware adding the fan doesn't stop the YLOD returning but it seems to improve airflow which always helps and prevents it from coming back so fast! I got given the PS3 for free so I just wanted to fix it as cheaply as possible! I live in the UK so it's not hot in my room also I only play it for a maximum of an hour a time maybe twice a week so I wouldn't expect another YLoD any time soon tbh.

I'm not sure it's worth you buying a YLOd board you may aswell put that money towards a new ps3? Your water loop looks cool I hope you get it working!
