Recommendations on a Nikon Camera - Page 2

D90 sucks balls for video, AVOID.

Also, does anyone read the OP before replying? It's for his brother.

If your brother likes the feel of the D3000, then he'll probably love how the D5100 feels. I personally can't stand the D5100 (I used to shoot a D5000) because it's so damn small, but the image quality is just as good as the D7000, which I love.

Another vote for D5100.

I personally went from a D3000 to a D5100 as a D3100 wasn't a big enough leap in features and potential to justify, D3100 has video but no external mic port (it's been reported you can hear the auto focus in your vids), D5100 does have the port and I can confirm I have never heard the auto-focus in any of my vids even without it, D5100 has better image quality, it also has way better low noise performance and then finally the articulating screen, never thought I'd use it but it's com in handy on more than one occasion.

AF in video is so terrible, that should never be the make-or-break.

but since it sounds like ur jumpin to canon... t2i or t3i is best option unless u wanna get 60d or 7d.. but i dont think ur budget allows it. lol

wat? Oh, I think you misunderstood, bro. This is a recommendation for my brother. He's a Nikon guy. I'm the Canon guy and I've already had my 30D for years. Like you and many others have suggested, and after some research on the camera on my own, I agree with you all and will recommend him a d5100. That's a hell of alot of camera for the price. thumb.gif

Yeah, he loves the size of the D3000. For me it did feel kinda small. But then again, he does have small hands *snortsnicker* lachen.gif

But yeah, it sounds like the D5100 is the perfect camera for him then. thumb.gif

lol oops ! yah d5100 seems like a suitable option especially since it allows the use of an external mic now. that was the one thing i didnt like about my d5k was that i had to use the mono mic. the layout of the buttons were changed on the d5100 which ive never experienced in person but it looks weird for me since it was quite different from the other nikon bodies... probably something to get used to.

d5k was the same sensor as the d90 and d300s which was nice cuz it produced really nice pictures. to hear the d5100 being the same as the d7k, should be fairly promising !

nikon.Ah. This is my thing. Been buying and using their bodies from prosumer bridge cameras to pro DSLR's for 12 years ( and film before that )

The D3000 series ( which is basically that and the D3100 ) are non-starters. They are really entry level toys. The sensor is not up to the job. The noise is terrible.

Up until recently I've been telling everyone that the best bang for buck, above entry level camera body is the 5100. For the cash it makes perfect sense and you have to buy a canon 60D to math performance and that's a prosumer model at a premium price.

However then came the D7000. Nikon have almost discontinued the semi-pro D300 ( it's a dog, I kept mine 4 months ) becaue they can't sell them. The much cheaper D7000 outperforms it in almost all technical areas. It does not have the ergonomics and durability of the D200/300/700 though. Much of that is what you pay for.

However in terms of all around capability then the D7000 out-performs the 60d canon and is absolutely on par with the canon 7D for less money.

If you don't already have glass it's a hard choice but as always get the best you can afford. If you have glass then it's no choice.

I'd advise anyone on a budget to get the D5100 but if you can stretch a bit further for the D7000 ( and buy used legacy lenses ) then you are getting a camera that is as good, if not better than the professional model above it. The D7000 is an odd camera and much like the D50 years ago, Nikon kinda made a cheaper camera too good so it eats into their sales of 'better' models.

Precisely what I was thinking when I did the research on the 5100. It seems very good for the money. He's not going to any need for a 7000, so a 5100 + glass will be more than enough for him. Thanks for the reassurance. thumb.gif
