new card for bf3 - Page 2

I personally feel like if you were going to do that, you'd be better off just spending 50 bucks more and getting the 7950, because it's newer, more powerful, less energy draw and has more ram (unless you don't like amd). But again, if you wanted to spend the least for the biggest bang today - SLI on your 570s would be the best, but eventually that'll become obsolete - from ram, probably. If you wanted to sell the 570 though for a bigger upgrade, I'd say 7950, 7970, or wait for the rest of the AMD line (and possibly the new nvidia cards in march-april). Waiting's not a TERRIBLE idea because of the stability of your current system. But a 7950 is a pretty good fit for you for a single monitor solution at 450 bucks.

Thanks Geritol!

But, what WILL happen, is EVENTUALLY you'll hit a ram bottleneck. Games are only going to become more and more demanding. So the question is better posed "do I want to buy this and then replace these cards in 6 months to a year when there are better cards on the market and I want the extra ram".
Personally, I'd wait for the other AMD offerings to show up as some of them will probably be in the correct price range to be a hefty increase for you, and even if they aren't, the new nvidia cards should only be about 2-3 months out. So, given that the performance increase isn't necessary (as others say, your rig is fine) and given that it isn't that futureproofed, i'd wait for something you really wanted and sell the 570 to soften the purchase of a single better card. Hell, selling the 570 you have and buying a single 7970 and overclocking slightly would offer you futureproofing and comparable performance to dual 570s in a single card solution, and if you could get 220-250 for the 570, you'd save money over just buying another 570. But you might not feel the urgency to go with a 7970 (or 7950, which is just as good at 1080p) and want to wait for the rest of the field to show up in march-april (of course your card will be worth less at that point).

so, if i went high than 1080 would that ease or eleminate the bottle neck?

The higher your resolution, the more ram you're going to find yourself needing. So if you ended up buying a really high def 30 inch monitor, or saying screw it and went with a three monitor setup for wrap-around, you would NEED extra ram. At 1080p, right now, 1.25 gigs is okay - but eventually, it's not going to be, as games invariably use higher textures, and cooler bells and whistles.

Basically, i'm just repeating some advice I got on this forum a month ago - which was...spending all that money on cards with lower ram is okay for what you're doing today - but 6 months from now (or a year), you're going to be kicking yourself for spending all that money on something you're just going to have to upgrade because there isn't enough ram in it.

If i were you, i would probably keep the 570 and wait for kepler. But if you really want to spend money now,,, sell your 570 and go for a 7950 or 7970.

I would just hold on to that card for a bit. Definitely look to go 2GB+ on your next one. I'm seeing about 1.5GB Memory usage in BF3 on Ultra.

I would get something with more VRAM.

I got 570's in SLI and I'm kicking myself for not getting the 2.5gb models or a 1.5gb 580.

I get random lag on my SLI 570's with stock Ultra settings with 64 players on a big map.

Only reason I stuck with nVidia was to play with 3dvision. If you have nothing holding you to one brand, why not consider both sides of the fence?
