Help! System locking up. No clue what the cause is. - Page 2

RAID support ain't it, I've had the raid drop off before cos of a poor connection - it just loses my Steam drive biggrin.gif

Hot swap enabled, still locked up. Took 18 hours to lock up this time though.

I don't have access to a spare PSU.

At this point, as I'm due an upgrade, I'm just going to get a new CPU/mobo/RAM, and if it persists I'll grab a new PSU too. All good.

Think this might be interesting.

I decided to rule out various components.

I know it's not the RAID array - just games on that, and I had a dodgy cable once so I know what happens when it drops out - the D drive vanishes. Nothing interesting there. I know it's not the memory or CPU, as under prime95 large and small pack torture tests it passes. The glitch happens generally when on my desktop, and it'snot yet happened in a game. Furmark confirms there are no troubles with my GPU, so that's fine too.

In the spirit of inquiry I pulled the data cable on my SSD to see what the lockup was like - it was fine for a few seconds, but when I closed a window it locked up - with one important difference. The mouse pointer was free to move when the OS drive was disconnected. When my random lockups happen, the entire thing freezes instantly; no delay (like when I unplugged the SSD) and no mouse pointer freedom (like when I unplugged the SSD). Therefore I'm happy to rule out the SSD and associated cabling.

That leaves the mobo, CPU and PSU. If the CPU craps out, I'd expect a BSOD or something, right? None of those yet, and it doesn't error when under load, so I'm inclined to think it's not the CPU. I doubt it's the PSU (12v rail is steady @ 12.10), but even if it is my hardware is ageing and frankly, I feel like an upgrade is overdue. Is there a way to test the PSU? I'm happy to buy a voltmeter or something, especially if there's an instruction set online I can follow.

I wouldn't have re-installed the os with the same drivers you thought were faulty in the first place. You could have always re-installed on a clean os again after you had ruled out they weren't an issue. That seems somewhat counter-productive.

A few things I would check first:

Are there any thermal controls enabled previously, such as: C1E or Q&C?

Have you checked for overheating? You haven't stated anywhere in your post what your actual system temps are? I'm thinking perhaps you have a faulty fan in the PSU or the graphics card -- both those issue could cause a lockup.

Usually lock up like that are the cause of overheating, but memory ones, especially IMC issues can be the cause as well; I'd check your VRM temps too, if you can. Perhaps you pushed the system too hard for too long, and now are starting to reap the horrors of it.
