tight budget-$250 - Page 2

I've seen the A6 APU being taken up to 3.6Ghz very easily - I think also with only very little increase in voltage - on the stock cooler.

Don't think there is an unlocking possibility.

What case and PSU from server?  How old?  APUs are power efficient and can be run on low end PSUs.  You could take part of the extra $50 and go A6 quad core 3650 APU.

Or if you wish to stay on AM3+ (totally reasonable as it is more future proof) a better motherboard with better VRMs for the high end processors (when you have the cash) would be very ideal.

here's a decent motherboard for amd...for now..

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=M4A79XTD-EVO-PB-R&cat=MBB

looks like it would be a good overclocker, too

tbh..i'd either do an uber-budget build (i.e. h61 and celeron/pentium)

or get one component at a time..starting with the PSU ..a good, beefy one..800+ watts
next motherboard
then a cpu/ram

If you can reuse your case..that's a plus

You shouldn't be buying from Newegg.ca as a Canadian customer (at least most of the time) due to really high shipping costs and high shipping time (since all Newegg.ca orders ship from California I'd expect high shipping costs AND time).  Canadian retailers such as NCIX almost always have a better deal and lower shipping costs.... and if they don't, do price match to Newegg.ca.

$120 shipped at BestDirect, $13 saved plus faster shipping times can be expected as BestDirect is a Canadian retailer

That MB is much better than Biostar one. PSU will not be an issue as long as it has a 4-pin CPU power connector and no -5 V rails on its specification. If it does have -5 V do NOT use it, it is too old.

Can you extend your budget at all?

I was thinking a 880g mobo by asus that is like the biostar one but with solid caps, 8pin cpu power and its a full atx with 4dimms and 2pcies. Go with the server case and power and thats $250. Btw, i love llano (used it in an htpc and it was awsome) but for my main rig i wanted something more upgradeable. If it can take bd it can take piledriver and now were set. I often and usely upgrade pcs, and i could diffitly see myself with an 8core and a mid range card if i get more into gaming. Do you think i should go for the asus? Is it worth the money?

u are getting it wrong here is a unlocked version in the APU series
AMD A6-3670K Unlocked Llano 2.7GHz Socket FM1 100W Quad-Core Desktop APU with DirectX 11 Graphic AMD Radeon HD 6530D $119.99

Motherboard
ASRock A55 PRO3 FM1 @ 74.99 that mother has is worth the money u are get
4x DIMM slots
2 X PCIe x16
RAM is overclockable upto 2400+Mhz
USB 3.0
8 channel Sound output
or
u can go cheaper at the motherboard too as cheap as $54.99

Get a APU/Llano! How many times do we have to say this. It is perfect for your budget and the Games you play. But honestly WoW and Minecraft is life so I can't consider them games. ANYWAYS, who cares if you can't have BD. iIts kind of a Faildozer.
