Switching from AMD to Intel, need some guidance

Thread Starter
Hello OCN'ers,

So, I've been running AMD since 2008. With Ivy Bridge coming out soon, I want to make the switch over. Currently running an AMD 965BE. I've never really paid attention all the socket/chipset info on Intel, so the help is needed.

Essentially, what I want to know, if I buy an 1155 motherboard now, will it support IB? OR will it be stuck with SandyB?

Also, I've really been eyeballing the AsRock boards (the Extreme models, black/grey look). Newegg reviews state that there's a lot of issues with bios and such. Should I trust those reviews?

I'll also be grabbing a new CPU block )probably the Raystorm).

At any rate, thanks for your advice/input/help./ smile.gif

Z68 boards will support PCIE 3.0 only with Ivy CPU only.

I am waiting for Z77 due if even I get a Z68 board... there are no Ivy CPU to power it anyways. I don't want to spend on a new 2500k CPU just for 2 months of wait.

tehm ASrock p67 or z68 borads will support Ivy Bridge cpus.. for ease get a gen 3 as you will have PCIe 3.0 and should noty require a bios update.. pretty much p67, z68 plus some others mobos you can drop an Ivy bridge cpu in it

or wait for the Ivy bridge boards if you like such as z77 thumb.gif

Any consumer based 1155 (even H61 and H67) will support IB once BIOS is flashed with the latest version. Now you can grab a P67 or Z68 MB right now, or wait and grab Z75 or Z77 along with IB. Do grab Gen3 MB if you are picking up P67 or Z68 MB (no need for non-SLI board, those boards support PCIe 3.0).

Newegg review taking it with a grain of salt.

PCIe 3.0 is enabled when IB CPU is used.

I have the ASRock Extreme3gen3 and I can tell you the bios is a dream. The reviews that say it isnt are from release when the y axis was messed up on the mice and a couple other bugs were there. There is no problems now and its one hell of a board. I say GET ONE!!! biggrin.gif
