First Time Build! Looking for Suggestions

Thread Starter
Started out with an E-Machine back in college, then bought a crappy CyberpowerPC. Now with my tax return I've decided to take on building my own rig. My main goals for the rig is gaming and recording video of said gaming. I also plan on doing some overclocking for the first time. My budget is around $1200-1500. I'm tired of gaming on "low" and "bare minimum" Here's my list, I look forward to any suggestions:

Case: Corsair Carbide Series 400R http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139008

CPU: i5 2500k http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139008

PSU: Corsair Enthusiast Series TX850M 850W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139029

MB: Asus P8Z68-V Le LGA 1155 Intel Z68 HDMI SATA 6BG/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131773

SSD: Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148442

RAM: G Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428

GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102962

Cd/DVD Burner: Asus DRW-24B1ST OEM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204

HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284

My main concern is the PSU and Motherboard. I went with 850W with looking to one day going crossfire with a 2nd 7950, is that a powerful enough PSU? Also I was a little clueless on picking a motherboard. I'm hoping to overclock the 2500k to 4 GHz, will I need an aftermarket solution? Any suggestions?

My recommendations:
Spend the extra $30/wait for stock on the Sapphire 7950 OC Edition
Change the mobo to Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z Gen3 ($170-180), its an absolute amazing board, I hit 4.5 stable after 20 minutes (not including the stress test that followed) on air.
Get a upgraded heatsink for the CPU, Noctua NF-12 (don't remember model exactly), its expensive but is outstanding. I used a Cooler Master GeminII S with no problem for cheap. Also CM 212+ is a great performer.

Your PSU is plenty for two 7950s.

That PSU is good enough for that build. You sir have done your homework biggrin.gif 4Ghz should be easy on that board but you'll need an aftermarket heatsink or a pre-built water cooling system to keep temps low if you want to go higher. Here's some suggestions.

Yeah I think I will swing the extra $30 for the OC Sapphire card when it comes in stock. I think I'll go with that corsair heatsink bleachigo linked, that will get me to just about the top of my budget. Don't think I'm ready to try watercooling... yet. I did do some homework, this site made it real easy, spent a lot of time in Reviews section and reading other people's builds. Glad I stumbled upon this site a few weeks back.

you definitely did your homework. everything in this build looks solid. you may want to look at the samsung 830 series just for the sexy brushed metal look to show off in that case of yours wink.gif

Tons of info on here, and we always help out with recommendations biggrin.gif

Watercooling isn't that scary, especially with the Rasa kit smile.gif If you ever decide on that, just post up or feel free to PM me thumb.gif

Hm, getting a little impatient waiting for Newegg to restock the Sapphire factory OC 7950, thinking about the Gigabyte version. I've been trying to find some information on the manufacturers, I've always used Asus when possible. Is Gigabyte a good manufacturer?
I would go with this HDD instead.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136793

64MB Cache, and SATA 6Gbps. And almost 3 years newer.

Not to mention getting another 500GB for $10.

Great build.thumb.gif

Gigabyte is good, but I tend to stick to ASUS, EVGA, XFX, and sometimes MSI. Sapphire and Gigabyte aren't on the bottom of the list what-so-ever though.
