Yeah, i saw that vid mate. Im the guy asking him questions in the comments. So isnt it a chance the reason he hits only 30fps is because of his HD 3870? With a better card and an overclocked 8120, it should emulate it perfectly yes? at least as well as the core i processors do. Im satisfied the 8120 will alleviate the bottleneck caused by my 955 in BF3, and im satisfied with the enhanced multitasking an 8core cpu should bring, but is it too much to expect double the performance of my 955 be at 3.9ghz with an 8120 at 4.5ghz? I think thats a reasonable expectation

Actually I did more digging. It turns out that Dolphin limits the FPS to around 30.

Using 2500K at 4.5 GHz and HD6950 2 GB

There is no way you will get double the performance from 955 to 8120 when it comes to gaming. Encoding or compression, very likely, but not on gaming. Gaming is not geared toward parallel computation. So having a 8-core CPU isn't going to beat a 4-core CPU when it comes to gaming.

I don't know about doubling the performance. But there is an exception where an 8 core will have an advantage over a quad core in games. That is multi threaded games. BF3 64 player map is a good example. Hopefully in the future we will see more multi threaded games along with an OS that can properly schedule threads. Single threaded games are the past IMO we need to move towards the future.

I doubt we will see massive amount of games supporting more than 4 threads. Most gaming just doesn't really have the "potential" to do so, never mind whether or not they are actually coded for it. Amdahl's law tells us that for each additional thread performance gain will be more and more marginal. Gaming has relatively low inflection point on the curve, especially most of them are porting from consoles.

Plus it cost developers significantly more money to have advanced multithread support. 8-core is useful in encoding and compression, not so much in gaming or mathematics computation.

Yes i can confirm that the 2500k will report 3.3ghz no matter how high your cpu is clocked:

Do you have any other graphics cards? I kind of want to know how this changes when they have to drive more powerful graphics.

Hey sorry about the laaaaaate update but was looking through and saw this old thread. I recently bought a i5 2500k and can confirm im getting 60FPS in Dolphin emulator (Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, with 2xAA 1080p). Plus, the battlefield 3 bottleneck i got with my 955 at 3.9ghz is totally gone. Though it may be noteworthy that i overclocked the i5 pretty much as soon as i put it in, running at 4.5ghz, ~15C cooler and got a jump of ~3.0points in cinebench.

I am finished and do not plan to update this thread since I have since sold the BD. Everyone already knows about its bad power consumption anyway. BF3 and SC2 do not have a benchmarking program so I didn't run those. Not sure about Crysis 2 though since I don't recall anyone bringing it up. The next benchmark comparison I do will be between the 2500k and FX-8350 or FX8320 depending on price.
