Choose a AMD processor for my HTPC

Thread Starter
I chose the AMD CPU's forum because I mainly want help choosing an AMD processor. I have an i7-2600k in my main desktop and want to play around with AMD processors. So I decided that I want to build an HTPC with an AMD processor.

This is the case I will be using (if you have other suggestions I am listening)...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163158

What I would like in the processor...
-Would like a quad core but not required
-Something less then $130 (If I need to go more so say)
-Ive heard alot about the Phenom x4(?), would this be a good choice?

Lets me know recommendations for the following also...
Graphics card (Im thinking something cheap, wont be playing video games)
Power supply (I have a corsair 650 watt I will be using)
Memory
Motherboard

Will definitely rep for help. Thanks guys, Im a noob when it comes to AMD processors.

I'd say go with the AMD FM1 APUs.
get the quad+onboard video combo if its just for a HTPC/1080p video. Plus you can run hybrid Crossfire if you ever see the need to game more on it.

I'll honestly say grab an APU. Just finished a build using the A8-3870K and I have to say I'm impressed. Running it at 3.4GHz and so far handling everything I throw at it, It even plays World of Tanks at 1080P(and at or above 30fps, avg depending on map the low 40's) on medium/low and a couple high settings. IMO it beats out by price having to buy a discrete gfx card of equal performance. I do have the gpu/apu side running at 800MHz instead of 600Mhz also.

And it's been fun as well. smile.gif Will make a good HTPC with nice flexibility and easy to cool so great for small form factor.

But if you don't want an APU, I'd say Zosma. thumb.gif

Edit: For memory if you go with an APU build I do suggest an 8GB kit of minimum 1600Mhz speed rated. And for a Mb with it I'd say Asus or Giga. I went with Biostar TA75M+ and while I won't hate on it, I wish i dropped $10 more for an Asus.

Two options, either AMD Zacate or AMD Llano. In your case AMD Llano (A8-3870K or A6-3670K for budget) is the way to go.

For FM1, I recommend leaning towards either Gigabyte or ASUS. They have some nice offering for FM1 CPU.

Memory speed is 1600 minimum, with 1866 being optional.

APU don't need GPU if you don't play game. Same is true for Zacate.

Zacate is a bit weak for non-accelerate HD though. It cannot run HD Netflix (Silverlight).

It does not really matter....

You don't need that much CPU power. You do need GPU performance.

So what would you recommend as being the best bang for the buck? I agree I dont need that much power but I want 'what i need + a little bit extra just in case'.

Btw, I have been drinking but I got a bonus today so I wanna get all this bought tonight so I get it asap. I love my job.
