A "How to" for reducing your ping for gaming in Windows 7/Vista

Thread Starter
I stumbled across this site explaining how to reduce your ping in games by altering the registry in windows 7 or vista.

I found this about a year ago and do it on every single new build. I tested it first in black ops. I had fresh install of windows 7 and the game itself. My ping in was roughly 90-115 ms every single time i joined a server, and worse I only could play in a few because the rest pinged to high for me to enjoy.

After applying the "fix" my ping now is 50-70 in the same servers played before. Everyone knows ping is reaction time and boy does it help.

I thought I would share my find with all of you, and trust me I have done this many times and its perfectly fine to do.

For all of you that want to criticize and say its all crap, your wrong. I have done this my self and it works amazingly. No need to flame me just trying to help out some fellow gamers. thumb.gif

Credit is not mine as I only discovered the guide that somebody else wrote.
How to lower your ping in windows 7/vista

Enjoy your now better ping!biggrin.gif

I suggest you look up what ping actually means. It's nice to spread information and such, but this is rubbish. Not trying to be an ass, but seriously, doing something locally on your computer isn't going to make a drastic change with how information travels between your computer and the internet, in terms of rtt. Just sayin'...

Maybe you should do some reading guy...Your computer or better yet the operating system dictates at what rate and how information should be sent. If you change the part of that system that governs info being received and sent you can gain different results.

The exact process I'm talking about is called Nagle's Algorithm (TcpAckFrequency) this is exactly what your altering to get slightly better ping.

So before you pop off with comment that you have no idea about, maybe read a little from time to time before judging someone else's post.

This is not a debate, this is not a lets bash an idea, this is a how to for people. You cant tell me it cant be done cause i have done it plenty of times with positive results. Read the artical genius.

Proof is in the link I provided use it or not up to you.

anyone whit programming knowledge who can confirm that this works and is not compromising security?
From what it describes its simply disabling a feature in W7 (Nagle's algorithm) that compresses packet transfer in order to reduce latency. ie larger traffic volume but more response. Good for gamers but not so good for heavy dl's with a usage cap

EDIT: Just been reading up on Nagle's, its a buffer against transmission overhead in TCP but only affects applications that don't have tcp_nodelay coded into them. ie if the game has proper coding then this fix should not have any impact. This is what ive garnered from light reading, tbh there should be no harm in testing this out. It might have an effect on some people, just make sure to make a system restore point or remember where to find the reg keys to reverse the changes.

Thanks for actually reading +rep

Also, you are only altering the adapter settings in the registry. It is completely safe as long as you follow the instructions to the letter, I know registry can be intimidating but it is fine.

I have attached a screen shot proving I have done it to mine with no problems.

Also, alot of games are not coded regarding proper use of protocols hence why this has worked in most of the FPS games that I play excluding BF3 as I have no base line I assume it was unaffected.

Just trying to help guys that is all. thumb.gif

Thanks. To be honest, i didn't quite understand what spartan means, but I take his word that it is safe, hehe! Better ping on bf3 is allways welcome thumb.gif
But. When streaming, does this make my streaming speed lower or something like that?

I did it. I'm not sure if it works, but that's because I already have quite low pings. However anything to give me a lower one is always welcome. Thankyou for posting this.

I'll give this a shot. I usually get anywhere between 20-50 ping on the local TF2 servers around here, so I'll see if that changes. I doubt it though.
