Good deal on speakers - Page 2

What is the amplifier for? Like a mixamp or something? And can those polk audio speakers be used for 2.1. Sounds like they are for the back in 5.1. Again I really have no idea with this stuff.

Amplifier is to give power to the speakers. Any speaker at all NEEDS an amplifier to drive it. Most multimedia speakers (PC speakers) have an amplifier built into them somehow (2.1 sets usually on the subwoofer).

The Monitor 30's are fine for 2.1. You can technically use ANY passive speaker with an amp, and use them for 2.1 if you wish. The Monitor 30's are a very good sounding bookshelf, they'll do well in a 2.1 setup. They can also be used as rears in a 5.1 as well. Speakers can technically be put wherever you need them to be used.

Just like me, I'm using 3 pairs of Dayton B652 bookshelfs right now. 2 are up front for my center channel, 2 are my sides, and 2 are my rears (my fronts are tower speakers). Then I've got another pair in the bedroom for 2.0 on my TV.

I see, so could you give me a link to a good amplifier from newegg or something. Also where could I get cheap stands for those book shelf speakers? They could not fit on my computer desk. And from a google search, the stands seem to be very expensive.

You would want to shop at Parts Express for an amplifier. wink.gif

Dayton DTA-100a is $90, and its by FAR my favorite T amp to recommend.

Lepai TA2020 is $21, and I've been hearing half and half response on it. Half good, half bad. I'll have one early this week to verify the problems I've heard about it. Most of the problems SEEM to be about interference noise coming from it, possibly due to bad cabling. Again...will be verifying this week.

Dayton DTA-1 is $45, only works with 4 ohm speakers though (most home speakers are 8ohm). Technically it'll work with 8ohm, but it'll only put out about 7-8w RMS at an 8ohm load, compared to 15w RMS at 4ohm.

Stands, so long as the speakers aren't too heavy, monoprice has some stands for $12 (just bought 2 sets myself, again...will be arriving this week).

EDIT:
You could also theoretically use a car amplifier or a car stereo head unit as well, so long as you can get a solid 12v to them.

Ewww..... 250-300Hz crossover frequency, high distortion, and low power levels. Also really high frequency "subwoofer" frequencies.

The "subwoofer" unit on those Logitech speakers is more of a mid bass driver than anything. It's too directional (you can tell exactly where its at in the room, which is a bad thing). You can also usually hear male voices through the "subwoofer" as well.

If you can get the Logitech's cheap enough....I suppose go for it. I'd rather buy the Creative 3130's myself, they sound similar for a LOT less money (and they're a little cleaner). If you're looking at spending $100 or more though, you're honestly almost better with going custom unless you don't ever want to do upgrades (subwoofer later).
