Asus Xonar Essence STX + Roland MA-15D questions

Thread Starter
Hello fellas, i finally got my STX and i'm very happy about it biggrin.gif

Now i have Roland MA-15D studio monitors to go with it and if you look it has Optical/Coax input option(which is connected this way atm.)

My question is, should i continue to use this way or should i hook up to STX via analog RCA's ? If so, why ? And should i connect via Headphone jack via 3.5mm to 6.3mm jack OR should i get RCA to RCA connectors and connect that way ?

And what else you suggest me do ?(setting i should and should NOT temper with, software... etc)

Thanks smile.gif

Use the analog RCA's which will sound better because it will use the STX's DAC whereas using coaxial will just bypass it.
You would see no difference in sound quality compared to an onboard coaxial/digital on your computer's motherboard.
If you had an external dac then you would likely feed the STX's coaxial into the ext. dac and then into your studio monitors

Thank you suntori3. I've no ext. DAC avaible atm. so i'll getting a good RCA to RCA cable as soon as possible and try it out. But tbh, even though it could be phsycological, there is a distinct sound quality difference between my onboard SPDIF out and STX's biggrin.gif But as i said i'll be getting my RCA cables asap and getting to use my Rolands' that way. BTW, Roland MA-15D does NOT support 192khz on optical input even though it says on it :/

Well there are differences between S/PDIF out on one device as opposed to another even though this is a digital link. It has to do with how the D/A process on the receiver is coupled with the S/PDIF signal itself on most implementations, but I'd be surprised this subtlety makes an audible difference here. It's not totally out of the question though.

As mentioned above, using the digital connection means some circuitry in your studio monitors is doing the D/A (and likely it can do a good job). On the other hand, the STX's D/A path is very clean, so if you let it handle the conversion instead and use the analog connections, that might be even better. Connecting through the line out via RCA is preferred, to bypass the headphone amp. However, it's not like the headphone amp would contribute any audible degradation when driving the line in of the MA-15D, so again, it's not a big deal.

Thank you mikeaj, that has been so informative. So, at least i can test both options via a cheap(not that cheap ones tongue.gif) 2xRCA to 2xRCA cable, if i can't notice any difference, i can use whichever i want smile.gif

Thanks again fellas...
